Notes for my 4th graders

1. French and Indian War

2. Vocabulary government- the laws and people that run a country, state, county, city, or town French and Indian War- a war between Great Britain and France, and its Native American allies militia- a volunteer group of soldiers

3. Fort Niagara- Fort at the mouth of the Niagara River, first built by the French in 1725 Fort Ticonderoga- Fort built on the waterway linking Lake George and Lake Champlain

4. Notes: France and Britain claimed much of the same land in North America British colonists kept moving west France built forts on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the Great Lakes, and Lake Champlain to stop the British from moving farther west

5. The governor of Virginia sent George Washington to Ft. Duquesne to kick out the French Washington killed some French soldiers, but later surrendered to the French at Fort Necessity This battle started what became the French and Indian War

6. The French won many of the early battles. British lost at Ft. Ticonderoga and Ft. William Henry British didn’t like the way the French fought, hiding in the woods British colonial militia was made up of colonists who fought to defend their homes

7. The British finally started to win British won at Ft. Ticonderoga on their second try British captured the French cities of Montreal and Quebec The French surrendered and Britain gained all of Canada and all lands east of the Mississippi River
