ABOUT THE REPORT
This NanoMarkets report provides an in depth market analysis of the opportunities
emerging within the field of quantum dots (QDs), examining the latest products, strategies
and technical developments in electronics applications for these emerging
materials. Within the report we assess how QDs are likely to penetrate addressable
markets in lighting and display applications and along what time horizon. We also
examine the technology hurdles facing QDs broader adoption and how the industry will
resolve them. The report also evaluates the potential of QDs vs competing technologies
and provides NanoMarkets opinions on how well QDs will fare.
The report also includes NanoMarkets’ assessments of the strategies of leading firms
active in the QD space with attention paid as to which are the companies to watch in the
market. In addition, detailed and granular forecasts of QD shipments in volume and value
terms and by application will be provided.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES FOR QUANTUM DOTS
Quantum dots (QDs) are likely to be the next big thing that is going to shape the modern
display and lighting industries
QDs have slowly begun to penetrate the commercial display market
The QD market can be broadly segregated into two main segments, displays and lighting
Opportunities in display and lighting segments:
QDs have strong potential to be a dominant large display format technology in the
near term, but will take some time to become successfully established in the small
display segment
QDs can gain substantial market acceptance in the small display segment, primarily
because of their ability to offer the right mix of performance and value as compared
to other similar technologies.
The lighting industry is likely to witness a good number of commercial launches,
particularly in the solid state lighting (SSL) segment

OPPORTUNITIES IN DISPLAY BACKLIGHTING
SEGMENT
Superior qualities of QD has made the industry to prefer QD over LEDs.
Both Photoluminescent and Electroluminescent QD technology looks promising but scope of
Photoluminescent is better.
Major developments:
Launch of color IQ technology based QD-enhanced LCD TVs by Sony in early 2013.
Color IQ, a photoluminescent QD technology is patented by US-based QD Vision.
QD-enhanced LCD TVs launch was followed by successive launches of QD-based Xperia
smartphones and Vaio laptops again by Sony.
Launch of MicroSideled3806 brand of blue QDs by German-based company Osram in 2013.
A shift from toxic QDs to Non Heavy Metal (NHM) based QDs.
Success of QDs also depends upon the strategy that OLED technology based OEMs (Samsung
and LG) adopt as OLED is still the most prominent competitor to QDs.

OPPORTUNITIES IN DIRECT-EMISSION QD
DISPLAYS
Pure QDs are likely to find applications in TVs, smartphones, tablets and
other small display devices.
Combined efforts of Samsung and QD Vision has made pure QD-based
small display devices a reality.
Potential of pure QDs to give tough competition to OLEDs is highest among
all QD technologies.
After overcoming some manufacturing barriers (like low life time)specific to
certain materials this QD Technology can be brought into commercial space.

OPPORTUNITIES IN QD LIGHTING
QLEDs are capable of overcoming the limitations of OLEDs
QLEDs have got good prospects in some lighting segment especially SSL.
Huge potential exists in the general purpose lighting segment (both commercial and residential)
With slight modifications in their product, QD manufacturers will be able to tap the opportunities
existing in this lighting segment.
Govt moves like ban on incandescent lamps can make this industry attractive.
Collaborations with OEMs can help QD manufacturers to grab the opportunities existing in the light
segment.
Other than traditional segments niche segments like projectors, video walls and digital signage
shouldn’t be ignored
As QDs are seen as substitutes to LEDs, there is scope of QDs in smart lighting solutions as well.

ROADMAP OF QD-BASED LIGHTING AND
DISPLAY SEGMENTS
QD backlighting for large display seems to be dominating.
Gradual adoption of QD backlighting for small displays.
For small display segments, pure QD likely to be important but not for large TV
displays.
QDs has potential to replace LEDs in flexible display segment as well.
QD based lighting solution still looks like a dream.
Adoption of energy efficient LEDs for lighting purpose paves a way for QDs in this
segment as QDs are seen as a better substitutes for LEDs.
