The document provides an overview of a study conducted on the water supply, sanitation and drainage facilities of the South Begunbari slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study was conducted by a group of students from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at BUET. The objectives were to explore the current conditions, identify related problems and their causes and effects, and provide proposals for improved facilities. The methodology included transect walks, social mapping, and pair-wise ranking. Key findings were insufficient and unequal distribution of water points, open drainage, and lack of sanitation facilities. 5. Historical Background

Year Event
Before 1945 Badda Taltola to Sonargaon Square was termed as “Flood Zone”, used for agricultural purpose
1945 British army made camp in the student hostel of Polytechnic Institute.
The inhabitants forced to make new housing in their agricultural land because of this camp.
1980 Initiation of “Pataton Ghar”. No Electricity, Water and Gas connection during this period.
House rent was within 150-300 taka, Only Pucca houses had Electricity connection.
1988 Severe flood ,15 feet high, Rapid development because of declaring Tejgaon industrial area
1992 Establishment of the mosque.
1996 Fire hazard – 42 houses burnt away.
1998 Severe flood with long detention period, Fire hazard – 50/52 houses diminished.
2002 Minor flood caused serious water logging.
2005 Nearest 14 storied building established.
2008 Acquisition of land by Bangladesh Army for the “Begunbari-Hatirjheel” Project without notice.
2000-2010 Construction of contemporary houses in South Begunbari.
2010 5 storied building collapse on nearby tin shed – death of 20 people.
Fire hazard – 100 house burnt away, Hatir Jheel link road construction started.
House rent 1500-3000 per room.

6. Historical Background
 At the initial period this area was used for agricultural purpose. Gradually
turned into a residential area for increasing housing demand by surrounding
industrial area.
 Flood hazard caused serious damage in this area in several years. Inhabitants
used “Pataton Ghar” technique , structures were built at least 10 feet above
the ground.
 In recent years more threatening problem was the fire hazard and building
collapse.
 Hatir Jheel Project acquired majority of its area past extent. New houses were
constructed in the last two years with Tin and Wood.
