Competitive Landscape Analysis
6. Expert Opinion
6.1 Mr Ryan Hazlett, Vice President Business Development, AAI
Unmanned Aircraft Systems
6.1.1 AAI’s Strength in UAV’s
VG: What role does AAI Unmanned Aircraft Systems play in the Airborne ISR market?
Ryan Hazlett: We are best known as prime contractor and lead systems integrator for products
®

including the U.S. Army program-of-record RQ-7B Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System
®

(UAS), known commercially as the Shadow 200, as well as the One System Remote Video
Terminal (OSRVT). We offer a range of UAS capabilities, from the renowned RQ-7B Shadow that’s
flown more than 880,000 flight hours, to the new Shadow M2 with enhanced endurance, reliability
®

and multi-mission capability. Our Aerosonde Small UAS is in service for U.S. Department of
Defense customers, providing high-endurance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR)
and other mission sets. We also have a significant legacy of UAS command-and-control expertise,
from the legacy One System Ground Control Station to the OSRVT and the new, interoperable
Universal Ground Control Station. In addition, Textron Systems supports these products with
training, operations and maintenance solutions.

6.1.2 A Growing International Focus
VG: Who are the main customers for these products?
RH: Our products are in service with both U.S. and international customers. The Shadow 200 is in
service with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, as well as the Australian Defence Force and
Swedish military. The Italian military is contracted to receive four systems as well. Our Aerosonde
system is in service for multiple U.S. Department of Defense customers providing key ISR support,
and also has begun performing ISR work for commercial customers. In addition, these and our new
Shadow M2 are all under consideration by additional customers domestically and internationally.

The scientific configuration of our Aerosonde Small UAS has been utilized in for research in some
of the world’s harshest environments. In 2007, an Aerosonde was the first unmanned aircraft to
penetrate the eye of a hurricane. Under a program administered by NASA and the U.S. National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Aerosonde aircraft flew a mission of more than 17
