17. The Desalination Market Forecast 2014-2024:
Future Prospects for Leading Companies
7. Expert Opinion
7.1 Biwater
Biwater is a UK-based company which designs, builds, operates and maintains water treatment,
wastewater treatment and desalination facilities, specialising in self-funded projects. Founded in
1968, the company has built, extended or refurbished some of the largest water and sewage
treatment plants in the world, and has the largest installed capacity of membranes in the US
desalination market. Their first reverse osmosis plant was commissioned as early as in 1971.
Richard White has been Senior Vice-President at Biwater AEWT (the US division of Biwater) since
2007, after joining the company as Project Engineer in 2006. In 2011 he became Co-Chairman of
the Young Leaders Program of the International Desalination Association (IDA). Visiongain spoke
to Mr White in January 2014 and would like to thank him for his valuable insights and comments on
the state of the industry.
7.1.1 Latest Developments at Biwater
Visiongain: Can you illustrate to us what the latest developments at Biwater are?
Richard White: We are currently working on a line of zero liquid discharge modular mobile
solutions.
Visiongain: What percentage of Biwater’s revenues derives from the sea- and brackish water
desalination sector?
Richard White: The aggregated value of our sales of desalination products makes up
approximately 10% of the company’s annual turnover.
7.1.2 The Growth Determinants in the Desalination Market
Visiongain: What are the main drivers in the desalination market in your opinion?
Richard White: Overall, I consider the main driver in the desalination market to be the issue of
water security.
Visiongain: What are the main restraints to the sector instead?
Richard White: I believe that environmental and plant operating costs are the main constraints to
the expansion of the current water desalination industry globally.

revenues in the desalination sector for $893m (KRW 951.0bn), according to visiongain’s
calculation, or 27.0% of global CAPEX for the year.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is an engineering company specialised in providing
construction management services to power generation and water production companies. Founded
in 1962 and active in desalination since 1978, Doosan gained international recognition in the sector
thanks to the success of its thermal systems. In particular, the Korean giant was able to establish
itself as the largest EPC contractor in the Middle East market – a position that it still retains: as of
2013, the Korean giant supplied 6.5 million tons of desalinated freshwater a day to 21 million
people in the region.
Despite having a renowned expertise in multi-stage flash (of which Doosan has the largest
accumulated capacity in the world) and multi-effect distillation systems, the company was able to
adapt to the commercial rise of membrane-based desalination and now produces reverse osmosis
and hybrid systems too.
