Student success is a key concern in the higher ed community. Join this session to learn how Western Governors University (WGU) and Cornell University are tackling student success issues by placing the emphasis on the student experience rather than on back office solutions. WGU will share how they are using predictive analytics to proactively ensure student success not only at the course level, but also in staying on track for graduation. They will also show how they’ve created a Student Community to increase collaboration and foster a culture among distance learners. Cornell will then share its student-first approach to building an engagement platform. It’s social on the front end and ‘big data’ on the back end with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive online experience.

As colleges grapple with enrollment, retention, and completion difficulties, it’s clear that students need a better understanding of just how a college education can help them on the path to a solid career. Community colleges play a key role in solving this problem. When colleges use data to clearly demonstrate the connection between education and the labor market, students have the information they need to choose smart careers, select the education that is right for them, and then stick with that education to the end. In this webinar, Noah Brown, CEO of ACCT, and EMSI’s Gabriel Rench discuss how community colleges impact the economy, how they can demonstrate the ways they serve their students and communities, and how they can engage young people about career and education decisions before they hit college.

The field of Educational Technology has seen marked growth from just a small number of distance-based doctoral programs to nearly 20 today. Creating and sustaining a quality doctoral program of any kind requires a substantial amount of work; the additional challenges of online programs both increases and changes the nature of the efforts required. Among these challenges is creating an admissions process that treats people fairly, does not create a burdensome system for applicants or those involved in the selection process, and ensures the selection of a solid foundation of high quality candidates with whom faculty can mentor, who add value to the program, and who can benefit from the program. This paper explores common admissions requirements among institutions offering a distance or hybrid doctorate in Educational Technology and examines the specific admissions system used by the Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University.

Presented by Patrick Lane, WICHE This webinar focuses on why reengaging adult learners (particularly those with some college credit but no degree) is such an important part of any metropolitan strategy to increase degree attainment. With demographic and workforce projections showing that the traditional education pipeline will not provide sufficient students to meet the future needs of employers, bringing back adults who have started but not finished a postsecondary credential is crucial. In addition to focusing on the need to serve these potential students, the webinar also shares promising strategies to develop collaborative relationships with other stakeholders to increase degree attainment.
