Building a better wall
LET’S PLAY!
 You and your partners need to build a barrier to
  protect your object.
 The barrier needs to be solid so that nothing can
  get in or out.
 You also need a flag/marker to identify your barrier
and to make it stand out from the other barriers
  being built in class.
 You are to use only the materials found in your bag.

 You have 10 minutes

 GO!
LET’S COLLECT DATA
 In your notebook, draw a picture of your barrier
 Explain your reasoning for building it like you did.
Observations:
 Compare your barrier to the table next to you.
 On the same page of your notebook, explain how
your two barriers are the same and how they are
  different using a T-chart.

            Similar to other Different to
            groups other groups
Making it more complicated…
 Now you have to modify your barrier to allow rice-
  man in and out.
 The opening should be just big enough for rice
  man.
Let’s collect more data

 In your notebook, modify your original
picture to show how rice man is getting
  in and out.
 Answer the following:
 How does this compare to other group
       modifications?
Getting even more complicated….
 Now modify your barrier to allow bow-tie
  man in.
 Bow-tie man can’t use the same opening as
  rice-man.
 Devise some way to let bow-tie man know
where his opening is (he has poor eye sight
and needs lots of help). You might try a
  signal/marker of some sort.
Collecting the last data….
 Modify your drawing in your notebook to show how
bow-tie man gets in and out. Make sure to draw in
  your marker/flag for him.
 Now do a gallery walk and see the barriers built by
  other groups.
 Write down 2 barriers you like and why.

 Write down 2 barriers you didn’t like and why.
Voting
 Now you will have to vote for the best barrier design
  in class.
 The best barrier will be saved, the rest will be
  dismantled.
 Take apart your barrier. Any materials that can be
        reused, return to your teacher.
