Our mission is to seek and provide the resources and
programs necessary for individuals to achieve literacy.
3. H i s t o r y :
The Literacy Council of Williamson County was
incorporated and began operations in 1985 A handful of
volunteer tutors served 19 adults the first year. Today,
the Literacy Council serves more than 1,000 adults with
the assistance of 90 to 110 volunteers.
4. Tutoring is provided in :
ESL (English as a Second Language) - English for non-
native English speakers.
Basic literacy - for adults who speak English, but are
reading below sixth grade.
GED preparation in the five subject areas of this high
school equivalent degree.
5. Who is eligible for services?
Adults in Williamson County and parts of N/NW Travis County who:
are at least 17 years old and not enrolled in school *
demonstrate a deficiency in literacy skills and/or lacking a high school diploma.
* If you are 17, you must provide school withdrawal papers and your parent(s) must sign your registration application.
6. Programs
Project: Moving Up- The program providing services
to adults in the general population who reside in
Williamson County and parts of northern Travis County.
7. Programs
Project: Better Chance - A correctional adult education
program contracted by Williamson County corrections.
Adults served include inmates at the Williamson County
Jail, residents at the Central Texas Treatment Center,
and adult probationers in Williamson County.
8. Programs
Workplace Literacy - A contracted service offered to
Employers at their place of business. The program is
designed to teach employees literacy skills necessary
to function at work.
