2. INTRODUCTION
THE HISTORY OF 3M –The founder: Dick
Drew
He is an icon and model for succeeding
generations of 3M managers, technician, and
researchers.
William McKnight ~ the boss who create a
climate and structure within which innovation is
encouraged, facilitated, and rewarded.
Inovation ~ adhesive know-how – making less
powerful adhesive : masking tape
3. The moral of the story is…..
You and your organization
should have the same goal
As William Knight.
•To stimulate innovation and
creativity
in your organization
4. The Role of Innovation in
Enterprise
Innovation valued by the marketplace has been
recognized as A CREATOR AND SUSTAINER
OF ENTERPRISE.(+ve)
E.g. Dell, IBM, Toshiba…produce new product
and again and again and again.
Innovation can also destroy. How? (-ve)
Symbolic of “winds of creative destruction”.
Those winds sweep away both old ways of doing
things and the enterprises and institutions that
cling to them.
5. The role of innovation
The ability to change and adapt is essential
to survival.
The ability to successful new products

6. Definition of innovation
Myres and Marquis (1969):
– “Innovation is not a single action but a total
process of interrelated sub processes. It is not
just the conception of a new idea, not the
invention of a new device, not the development
of a new market. The process is all these
things acting in an integrated fashion.”

Rogers and Shoemaker (1972):
– Clarify the use of the term “new” in the
context of innovation.
– “It matters little, as far as human behaviour is
concerned, whether or not an idea is
‘objectively’ new as measured by the lapse of
time since its first use or discovery….if the
idea seems new and different to the individual,
it is an innovation.”
8. Continue…
Innovation is concerned with the commercial and
practical application of ideas or inventions.
What is invention? It is the conception of idea,
the process of converting intellectual thoughts
into a tangible new artefact (usually a product of
process)
Whereas, innovation is the subsequent translation
of the invention.
Innovation=theoretical conception + technical
invention + commercial exploitation
9. Therefore…
Innovation is the management of all the activities
involved in the process of idea generation,
technology development, manufacturing and
marketing of a new (or improved) product or
manufacturing process or equipment.(Trott, 2002,
p.12)
Creativity=the thinking of novel and appropriate
ideas
Innovation=the successful implementation of
those ideas within an organisation.
10. The Innovation Process
• Begins with two creative acts:
1. Idea Generation
2. Opportunity Recognition
Idea Generation >>Opportunity >>Development >> Commercialization
Recognition
Idea Evaluation
