1837-1841 • Democrat, Jackson’s 2nd VP
• Inherited economic problems
leading to Panic of 1837:
– No more Bank of U.S.
– States printing lots of $$$.
– Public lands for sale went
fast.
– Jackson had tried to slow
down land speculation by
making them pay in gold or
silver.

or silver, banks didn’t have it-They closed!
– Depression hit.
– Van Buren used laissez faire approach-unpopular!
