Severe Weather and its Impact By: Lindsay Marquette and Amanda Knox Classification| Identification | Social Impact
Unit Learning Objectives To define severe weather and give examples To describe the characteristics of severe weather To practice using technology through research and homework assignments To read weather maps and symbols To describe the social consequences of severe weather
Lesson 1: An Introduction to Weather Atmosphere Climate Elemental Changes
Interaction Point Watch the videos and write 3 characteristics of each weather event. Hurricane ,[object Object]
Earthquake,[object Object]
Lesson 2: Tornados Name 3-4 defining features of severe weather Describe the characteristics of a tornado Classify tornados in a table based on characteristics found in the lesson
Individual Assignment What were some of the things you saw? What do you think you might feel if you were in a tornado? What types of things might you be concerned about? Why is it important that you understand how tornados form and what their impact might be? Watch the Video
Class Assignment Read the information provided about how tornados form Follow four of the links onto the connected pages and read the summaries there Draw your own map which demonstrates what you learned about how tornados form Use the map drawing to write small summaries on the same page of the map. The summaries should describe a few points from each of the links you explored. Click on the Site
An Interactive Map Drag the scrubber along each chapter in the simulation which will reveal sections for you to click on and read Write a summary for each section in your weather journal In a final paragraph, describe how this simulation changed your thinking about tornados. Click on the Site
Name the states most likely to be impacted by tornado Name the states least likely to be impacted by tornado Based up this map, what is the ratio of states not impacted to states impacted by tornado?
Intensity of tornado occurrences vs. total death rate
Top Ten Killer Tornadoes in the United States (Source: Tornado Project Online)
Lesson 3: Reading Weather Maps Identifying the states, counties, cities and regions of a map Name and draw the systems, fronts, and precipitation for an assigned area Define weather terms with 80% proficiency
Individual Activity Create a table which shows the weather symbols and their meanings Draw a map of a country in the world and use the weather symbols to indicate the type of weather they might be experiencing this time of year Put a star next to terms you see all of the time in our own weather reports for our home town Click on the Site
Group Project You are assigned to a group and a state Go to www.weather.com and enter the name of your state Study the maps and information given Draw several posters which reflect a map and use weather symbols to indicate the type of weather which is going on for your state Use weather terminology as you describe what type of weather is occurring in each state Click on the Site
Atmospheric Research There are six links sited on the home page. This assignment will help you navigate through each of these links. Select a different state than one you live in now. Perhaps the state of a friend or relative. Go through each link and explore each page. Use a zip code from your chosen state to find out information about that state’s weather. Use the copy/paste features to capture pictures of maps and satellite images as you explore the different scientific aspects of map reading Write a summary of what you learned. Make sure you mention details about what each link showed and perhaps something new you learned or something which surprised you about the links you explored. Click on the Site
Lesson 4: Impact on Society Describe 3-4 ways in which our society is impacted by severe weather Describe disaster coping strategies Can locate information on the internet to help prepare for and clean-up after a severe weather event Consider the personal toll and loss
A Personal Loss Watch 3 videos, Read 1 Article (links embedded into page) Write an essay about the human cost in severe weather. Discuss how social media has impacted how society communicates, grieves, heals, and contributes during times of trauma. Carefully view the charts and graphs presented in the PowerPoint Complete the assigned worksheet based upon the information provided
Tips for Managing Traumatic Stress Go to: http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/tornadoes.aspx After viewing the video and reading the web article, write a 1 page journal entry sharing your thoughts on the emotional damage caused by tornados. How would you cope with the loss of your home and all your possessions? Write down at least six ways to help yourself and another during a traumatic loss, like a tornado With a partner, write a brief dialogue between yourself (partner 1) and a friend (partner 2) who has just been through a violent tornado. What advice would you give your friend on coping with the aftermath of the disaster? With your partner, act out the dialogue you wrote to the class
Economic Costs Create a table which shows the annual tornado summary for the years 2000-2010. Draw 3 conclusions: Has the cost grown, become smaller, or stayed the same? Which year had the most deaths? Is there a pattern in the statistics? Write a short paragraph which describes the cost of severe weather compared to the region of the country. Can you explain why one region may be impacted more than another? Click on the Site
Lesson 5: Summary of Severe Weather Review all objectives from the week Allow for group presentations and discussion Give unit exam

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Weather refers, generally, to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas climate is the term for the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time.Climate encompasses the statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological elemental measurements in a given region over long periods of time. These elemental changes can be discovered by classifying what is going on in the elements and then communicated to the public through maps and symbols. The weather has an important impact on society. In fact, most cultures form their customs and practices around what is going on in the weather. How and when crops grow is impacted by weather. Where a person lives is impacted by weather.
  2. Answer the questions:What were some of the things you saw in the clips? How would you feel if you were caught in severe weather?
