1457325-866775
Well there are lots of factors that create an atmosphere of a thriller. The things that can contribute are things such as ; music, story line, the mise-un-scene , theme and characters. One of the main conventions of a thriller would be the cinematography. It has been the same through out the legacy of thriller films. The intensive, use of close ups and extreme close ups are used to their limits this is mainly done to produce suspense and mystery; also it can focus on key objects or props the help the narrative. The audience also see the characters Facial expressions in a much greater detail this also might add to thrill. Editing may also be used to help to convey a thriller effect. Jump cuts are very common for films in this era, mostly used in title sequences. The jump cut type of editing is used as there is a multiple things happening in the same time that we are unaware of, these cuts fill them and make the scene or continuous and flowing. Cross cutting is also a key point in editing and used to build suspense. Most of the time the editing phase is fast, due to the fast cuts we can infer that the film is action packed and full of thrill event. Continuous editing is also used to its potential to help the audience to understand the film in more detail and better. They tend the sound played can help a lot in a thriller to add suspense and tension. It usually starts of with a slow pace and then gradually the tempo speeds up to make the shot more dramatic. Also in thrillers the sounds tend to be more emphasised usually in the part of the climax, e.g. The water droplets hitting the ground. Also the other factor is the storyline and the way it is presented. In a thriller there always tends to be a mystery , there will most properly be an enigma presents which will run throughout the thriller film and it would be answered at the end and its usually discovered by the antagonist or protagonist , which has put together the jigsaw puzzles and worked it out. The pace of the movie is seen as the most important element. The pace speeds up when its an action packet scene this gives it sense of adrenaline and slows down when the protagonist is figuring out the plot and putting the pieces in place, this tried to put us in his position and gives us time the figure it out with him. The mise-un-scene is very important as well, location is a key , depending on the theme of the thriller we can determine were the location would be. It could be in the country side, to give it a element of the unknown and the feel of not owning that’s out there also the fact that it’s isolated from the rest of society makes it a good location of a thriller. On the other hand if it was in a city, where lots of action takes place, there is culture, diversity and a high population. Making a place were crime happens as normal place where the audience themselves are likely to live, so they can relate to it and gives the movie of an edge because it gives a feel that it can also happen to them. The costumes yet again vary. Something’s the antagonist villain is clothed in very ordinary and casual outfits, e.g. travelling to work or just walking by. This again gives it vibe to the audience that a villain can be anyone even someone you didn’t expect. The protagonist is usually a everyday person who is thrown into the story unwillingly or an agent so the costume is standard. Props are nearly always used in thrillers they could in forms of clues or murder weapons. The themes that are put across are also very virtual. The main themes established are ; isolation, vulnerability , loneliness, betrayal, revenge, passion/love, troubled childhood, outcast, obsession and jealousy. Stereotypically its a male who is the antagonist maybe accompanied with a sidekick. The protagonist is usually a mixture of male and females.
