Producing Accessible Video Presentations and Tutorials Using RealShow 1.0 Dr. Alaa Sadik Department of Instructional & Learning TechnologyCollege of Education, SQUMarch 28, 2011www.alaasadik.net 1
Background: PowerPoint MS PowerPoint®is the leading presentation software used in our professional and educational world for years. It is easy-to-use, flexible, popular, and cost-effective, and allows teachers and students to create multimedia content (multiple formats) quickly. 2
Background: PowerPoint However, PowerPoint ® is: a teacher-oriented presentation tool. not substitute for the in-depth information and guidance a presenter should deliver. 3
Background: PowerPoint if students are not seeing or listening to the teacher in the lecture, then reading the slides in isolation will be less valuable. 4
Background: PowerPoint not interactive, and the presenter usually needs to use a whiteboard or flipchart to interact with the audience. 5
Background: Video Video is an expanding channel for students learning. - anytime/anywhere,- flexible/ portable,- socially acceptable,- link the teacher and students,- meet a variety of learning styles,- more realistic than reading,- fast forward, pause, and replay, and- motivating. 6
Background: Video In conclusion There is increasing interest in providing students with recorded class materials and multimedia content. 7
The Solution There is a need to a solution that automates the process of producing video presentations and combines teacher’s: PowerPoint slides, video view, drawings/illustrations, & text typing. 8
The Solution RealShow: helps teachers apply principles for the design of multimedia materials and human cognitive processing. takes advantage of the dual-channel structure of the human information processing system by means of text, pictures and audio. 9
The Solution RealShow: gives learners a sense of interaction with the teacher while watching the lecture (social presence). reduces students’ cognitive load by helping them select and organize what is important. 10
Features RealShow 1.0 helps presenters to: Open and display already made real PowerPoint slides within the same window. Extract slide note attached to each slide and display it in a small text box beside the slide for easy narration. Navigate through slides the same as they move in PowerPoint full screen mode. Display current slide number, title and total number of slides in the status bar. 11
Features Recognize any number of USB or integrated webcams, with the possibility to change video format and properties.   Display presenter's video in a full screen mode, within or beside the slide window. Illustrate and explain content using a simple whiteboard with useful tools for illustration. Record presentations as a video file in different formats. Pause, resume and stop recording. 12
Implications E-Learning and distance education courses. Blended learning environments (supportive materials). Learners with disabilities: - Deaf/hearing impaired learners.- Physically disabled learners.- Learners with medical conditions. Learners with learning or perceptual disabilities. Job interviews. Knowledge sharing and remote/virtual conference participation. 13
