Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA Understanding of Autism ABA The Son-Rise Program Sees Autism as a behavioral disorder , with behaviors to be either extinguished or reinforced Sees Autism as a social interactivity disorder , where the central deficit is relating to other people The child needs structure and must learn to sit appropriately, follow a schedule, and comply with requests Helping the child to be flexible and spontaneous enables him/her to handle change and enjoy human interaction
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA Area of Focus ABA The Son-Rise Program Changing the behavior of the child Creating a relationship with the child Seeks to “extinguish” the child’s repetitive “stimming” behavior Uses “joining” technique to participate in the child’s repetitive behavior
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA Method of Teaching New Skills ABA The Son-Rise Program Repetition – Uses discrete trials or similar method to prompt the child to perform a behavior (followed by a reward) over and over again until the child has demonstrated mastery Motivation – Builds the child’s own interests into every game or activity so that the child is excited, “comes back for more,” generalizes skills, and relates naturally rather than robotically
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA Areas of Learning ABA The Son-Rise Program Often focuses on academic skills Always teaches socialization first
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA The Role of the Parents ABA The Son-Rise Program Professionals are the major players , with parents having a more observational role Parents are given the most central role because their love, dedication, and experience with their child is unmatched
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA The Role of the Facilitator’s Attitude ABA The Son-Rise Program Sees attitude as largely irrelevant , with effective application of behavior shaping techniques being what matters Sees attitude as vitally important , since having a non-judgmental and welcoming attitude determines whether the child feels safe and relaxed enough to interact and learn
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI Repetitive “Stimming” Behaviors Floortime/DIR The Son-Rise Program Advocates being “playfully obstructive”, which means endeavoring to generate social interaction but playfully getting in the way of the child’s behavior so they have to interact with you to move you. Advocates “joining”, which means entering the child’s world by enthusiastically participating in their repetitive behavior until the child interacts of their own volition. This is seen as central to creating a willing interpersonal connection.
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI Repetitive “Stimming” Behaviors RDI The Son-Rise Program Neither stops nor joins the child . Advocates "joining" , as explained above.
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI Red and Green Lights: The Exclusive/Interactive Continuum Floortime/DIR and RDI The Son-Rise Program Seeks the child’s interaction regardless of the child’s “state.” Facilitators are taught to look for opportunities to create and build interaction as much as possible. Teaches how to see, in each moment, where a child is on a continuum - from exclusive/in their own world (red lights) to interactive (green lights). During red lights, children are joined in their world. Teaching and challenging happens only when the child is giving a green light.
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI Celebration of the Child RDI The Son-Rise Program Does not believe in big celebrations of the child (particularly with regard to eye contact) because of a concern about doing anything which might be construed as ABA-type behavior-shaping reinforcement, which is seen as bleeding social interaction of most of its humanity. When the child engages in some way, the facilitator either remains silent or “spotlights” what the child did in a low-key manner. Sees another way forward with a different kind of huge celebration which adds humanity. Celebrates eye contact, communication, flexibility, and engagement as magnificent and meaningful steps toward the world of others. Uses celebration to express a deep sense of gratitude that the child can understand, enhancing closeness and social engagement.
Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI The Importance of Attitude Floortime/DIR and RDI The Son-Rise Program Sees attitude as largely irrelevant, with effective application of each program’s techniques being what matters. Sees attitude as vitally important, since having a non-judgmental and welcoming attitude determines whether the child feels safe and relaxed enough to interact and learn. It also determines whether parents stick with a program.

  • 38. Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® versus ABA Areas of Learning ABA The Son-Rise Program Often focuses on academic skills Always teaches socialization first
  • 42. Methods and materials for teaching exceptional children. Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program ® Autism Treatment Center of America™ The Son-Rise Program vs. Floortime/DIR and RDI Repetitive “Stimming” Behaviors RDI The Son-Rise Program Neither stops nor joins the child . Advocates "joining" , as explained above.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. As with any skills or abilities that you want your child to acquire, clear stages of development are essential to knowing what to teach and when to teach it (i.e. learning to read has clear stages of development from sounding out letters to reading books independently.) Social development from autism to a socially successful child/adult is no different.
  2. However, when other therapies which contain techniques that are directly conflictual with the principles of The Son-Rise Program are used, this hinders the program’s effectiveness and confuses the child. Applied Behavioral Analysis [ click here ] to see the differences between ABA and The Son-Rise Program ], for instance, utilizes techniques which are almost universally in opposition to those of The Son-Rise Program , such as attempting to extinguish repetitive behaviors, prioritizing behavior change over relationship-building, and teaching new behaviors through repetition and rewards. Even relationship-based treatment programs such as Floortime/DIR [ click here ] to see the differences between Floortime/DIR and The Son-Rise Program ], which some have claimed is very similar to The Son-Rise Program , is conflictual to the basic principles of The Son-Rise Program . Floortime/DIR utilizes a principle called being “playfully obstructive,” where the facilitator playfully gets in the way or interferes with a child’s repetitive behavior so that the child must interact in order to get the facilitator out of the way.
  3. As you can imagine, if we sometimes ‘join’ a child in his or her repetitive behaviors (as prescribed in The Son-Rise Program ) and at other times stop the child (ABA) or attempt to obstruct the child from doing those behaviors (Floortime/DIR), we are not only confusing the child, but also undermining the most fundamental rapport-building centerpiece of The Son-Rise Program . This means that we are taking a child with a social relational disorder and further undercutting that child’s ability to feel safe enough, trusting enough, relaxed enough, accepted enough, and interested enough to reach out and relate to us more. As an additional note, Son-Rise Program providers have in-depth attitudinal training as key part of their training so that our methods will be utilized with the utmost love, respect and celebration of the child.
  4. The Son-Rise Program and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of autism treatment methodologies.  The major differences are briefly outlined here.  To read a much more detailed and comprehensive explanation of the differences
  5. As with The Son-Rise Program, Floortime/DIR and RDI understand the importance of social connection and relationship development for children with autism. And, as with The Son-Rise Program , Floortime/DIR and RDI focus on these areas (as opposed to ABA, which focuses primarily on behavior change). For that, we have a great deal of respect for these two programs. However, although the overall goals are the same, the way that the Floortime/DIR and RDI methodologies endeavor to achieve these goals is very different from The Son-Rise Program . These differences in approach make all the difference for both parents and their children.
