In 2010/11 Larkin Community College
{LCC} Transition Year {TY} Science
students teamed up with 5th class
students from Central Model Senior
School {CMSS} to carry out a Spring
Clean Event in a local community park.
After a good clean-up students
celebrated with a small party at LCC &
awards for “best litter-picker”.

In 2011/12 LCC & CMSS teamed up again
but with an additional community link
to include three Environmental Society
volunteers from Trinity College Dublin,
Ireland {TCD}.
The program had a collaborative
mentoring philosophy whereby students
& volunteers from the three schools
co-operated to explore responsible
attitudes towards sustainable living.

Anti-litter Induction – 1.30hrs
TY students from LCC prepared an anti-litter
induction with an introduction aimed at
establishing attitudes towards litter, a video
about littering, and a series of worksheets.
CMSS 5th class were also organised into 4
groups and each agreed on a team name.

Litter Pick – 1.30hrs
The litter-pick was arranged from CMSS to LCC
via Marlboro Street.
Waste was collected & placed in coloured bags
for recycling at LCC. The bags were coloured
for plastics, metals & general waste items.
All students wore gloves & each team had a
number of litter-pickers.
The waste was weighed and results showed that
a majority of the waste was plastic, mainly
sweet wrappers, crisp bags & bottles.

Eco-warrior Design – 3*1.30hrs
TY students collaborated with LCC Art
teacher Mr. Chivers to design a series of
art workshops to help the students of
CMSS 5th class to create their own Eco-
warrior animation figure.
Animation skills were taught and each
student created an eco-warrior character.
Colour & warrior names were added and the
class created an extensive portfolio of eco-
warrior characters.

Green Planting – 3*1.30hrs
TCD Environmental Society volunteers gave 2
planting workshops to LCC TY
students, one at LCC and one at TCD as
part of their Green Week celebrations.
LCC TY students collaborated with CMSS to
design a planting strategy around their class
room. A planting workshop was given to the
5th class students. The ground was cleared
of weeds and planting achieved on a very
wet but excellent planting day.

LCC Waste Green Flag Launch – 1*3hrs
Minister Costello launched LCC’s first green
flag for waste on 21 March 2012.
It was a whole school event with guests from
education, business & community members.
Special guests included the CDVEC CEO &
Education Officer, Adult Education
Officer and local Principals & Teachers
The VIPs were CMSS 5th class.

Celebration at CMSS– 1*1.30hrs
As a celebration of the Neat Streets
programme 2011/12 the Principal & Home
School Liaison Officer of CMSS, Mr. Coll &
Ms. Goss, cooked a fabulous breakfast of
bacon & sausages, toast & biscuits with plenty
of tea & coffee for all LCC TY students &
Ms. Conway.

The Final Reward – 1*3hrs
Due to prior commitments, the President of
Ireland, was unable to attend the launch LCC’s
first Green Flag but later invited the Green
Schools Committee to attend an event in Áras
an Uachtaráin on 23 May 2012.
It was a good year & a great programme raising
awareness about litter & waste and fostering
strong community collaboration & participation.
It was great working with so many people.
