Businesses will be better in a more connected world. Facebook connects people and their friends to the things they care about and delivers this wisdom of friends all the time, everywhere. During Facebook’s f8 conference, we announced a set of products that will help people and their friends connect to the things they care about in even deeper ways. With Timeline - a new kind of profile - it is easy for people to express themselves and share their favorite activities. People will create even deeper connections and more authentic conversations on Facebook. For marketers, this unlocks business potential. And businesses will be able to communicate with people and their friends in even more relevant ways based on these unique connections. Finally, marketers interested in developing on the Facebook Platform will have the opportunity to create apps that become an essential part of people’s Timeline. Let me tell you more about it.
Facebook allows people to connect with the friends and things they care about. The profile page is where people tell their friends who they are and what they like. At f8, we just announced Timeline, a new kind of profile. Timeline is a collection of all the top photos, stories and life events that make people who they are -- organized as they happened. With Timeline, people will be able to express themselves in new ways, see what their friends like, and control what shows up. Timeline is people’s stories on one page. You can also upload a cover photo with your Timeline, a prominent photo that represents something important to you, that appears as a backdrop to your profile picture. Today, Timeline is only being released to developers. Timeline will begin rolling-out to everyone else in the coming weeks
People continuously create connections with the things they care about, and some of these connections may happen on your site. We are launching new features of the Open Graph that make apps a bigger part of the Facebook experience than ever before. When people add your app to their Timeline, you create a persistent connection with them, which lets them share all the things they do on your site. This can include music they've listened to, outfits they've put together, and many other things. As people engage with your application more and more, these actions will become more prominently displayed on Facebook throughout Timeline, News Feed, and Ticker. This enables your app to become a key part of people’s experience on Facebook. With this extension of Open Graph, you will be able to best describe the actions people take with the content of your site. For example, if you are a recipe site, you could allow people to add to their Timeline all the recipes they are "cooking" or “saving”, as opposed to simply “liking”. We have also created “global actions”, for actions people take a lot. These actions are: listen , watch , read . Because these are important and popular actions, they are likely to get more distribution in the News Feed and Timeline. Please note that your app can start publishing global actions to News Feed and Ticker today. Apps using custom actions will only be able to publish to people once Timeline is rolled out to everyone in a few weeks.
