Overview of Border Lives

“To ensure that the stories and experiences of those living in the 
Border Region during the Northern Ireland Troubles, are captured, 
replicated and shared in innovative ways that are accessible to both 
new and wider audiences locally, regionally and internationally.” 
• Create 6 documentary films and 7 viral videos (interview 80 people) 
• Create a new website www.borderlives.eu 
• Create an E-Learning programme – Rethink 
(www.rethinkborderlives.eu ) 
• Organise 36 public events 
• Use new technologies to tell and share stories (Social Media, App, Storee)

Purpose: 
• To enhance the educational aspect of the Project; 
• Use Storytelling as a teaching and training method; 
• To use engaging interactive content that promotes Border Lives and 
engages learners to learn more about the Northern Ireland Troubles;
What we asked Aurion to do.. 
• Create three e-learning modules that would complement & enhance 
the Border Lives Project; 
• To include a variety of appropriate interactions & engaging activities 
to keep learners engaged; 
• To devise a highly interactive, rich learning & visually attractive site; 
• The modules should be an introduction to these topics which would 
supplement class based training rather than replace face-to-face 
learning;

Future Work 
• Opportunities to expand the e-learning site via new funding streams. 
• Potential to roll out to the Curriculum North & South of Ireland under 
the “Citizenship” module. 
• “Storee” element of the project will ensure that the site remains user-led.

Overview of Border Lives BY CONOR McGALE, PROJECT MANAGER “To ensure that the stories and experiences of those living in the Border Region during the Northern Ireland Troubles, are captured, replicated and shared in innovative ways that are accessible to both new and wider audiences locally, regionally and internationally.” • Create 6 documentary films and 7 viral videos (interview 80 people) • Create a new website www.borderlives.eu • Create an E-Learning programme – Rethink (www.rethinkborderlives.eu ) • Organise 36 public events • Use new technologies to tell and share stories (Social Media, App, Storee)

  • 7. Border Lives & e-learning Purpose: • To enhance the educational aspect of the Project; • Use Storytelling as a teaching and training method; • To use engaging interactive content that promotes Border Lives and engages learners to learn more about the Northern Ireland Troubles;

What we asked Aurion to do.. • Create three e-learning modules that would complement & enhance the Border Lives Project; • To include a variety of appropriate interactions & engaging activities to keep learners engaged; • To devise a highly interactive, rich learning & visually attractive site; • The modules should be an introduction to these topics which would supplement class based training rather than replace face-to-face learning;

  • 12. Working with Aurion • Website design, strong colours, navigation and layout of the site (Site meetings/reviews). • Having the site tested and live for the high-profile launch in Stormont at the end of September.
  • 13. Future Work • Opportunities to expand the e-learning site via new funding streams. • Potential to roll out to the Curriculum North & South of Ireland under the “Citizenship” module. • “Storee” element of the project will ensure that the site remains user-led.

  2. 4 Modules: Restart, Remembering, Renewal & Reconstruction Restart: Introductory Module exploring Borders, Stories and Conflicts and how they impact on each other; Using a series of videos explaining the project, people’s roles within it, the role of narrative in conflict & moving forward, different types of Borders and the role Borders play in conflict (Colin Craig) Asking questions including multiple choice, transcripts of all the videos, Reflecting on Key Points made for the learner, Links to sites explaining other conflicts, Remembering: Interviews with 12 Key Participants who took part in the filming to show how the conflict shaped the identities of people living on or near the Border: Brendan Curran ex IRA & Sinn Fein, Cyril & Christine Rusk Border Protestants living in Monaghan in the South of Ireland who talk about being left behind, David & Fiona Smyth Members of the Orange Order who live in South Armagh talking about how the IRA drove the Irishness out of them, Brian Mc Domhnaill who was the Deputy Editor of An Phoblacht the official newspaper of the Republican Movement, Tommy Fegan who felt excluded from the North for being a Catholic and the South as he was the “Black North” Renewal: The module deals exclusively with the Iceberg model of conflict and reconciliation, a model that has been used to deal with everything from personal conflicts, to border Conflicts, Gang Wars in the US, etc. Click on the hyperlinks to show the pop-ups of the model and external papers. The videos deal with the various stages of the Iceberg Model: Formation, Maintenance, Reconnection, Reconciliation, & Releasing the Past. Again the use of questions, reflective learning points are prevalent in this and all of the modules. 7. Reconstruction: This module talks about the paths of those working towards a shared future and demonstrate aspects of leadership such as building trust within the communities that are featured within the e-learning. 5 video case studies are used to describe how people have used narrative to move forward post conflict and this includes a Cross Border Women’s Group, an Ulster-Scots Group, a local Orange Hall and a Community Association that assists them to run activities, a youth group, and a cross border community development association. Also there are text version of the case studies on the site also. Highlight the linkages used as well in this module. 8. The module ends with allowing the user to tell their own story through the Storee feature of the site which was also developed by Aurion. This feature allows people to record their own audio, use their photos and images to explore similar themes that have been used in the e-learning site
  3. Content: Starting with a blank canvas as we didn’t have any within the organisation. This was our first e-learning product The films that you see were produced by our video partners Macmillan Media, who were making the 6 documentaries. So there was content needed for two different audiences. As a result both Aurion and Macmillan had to work closely to ascertain the relevant clips despite having their own individual targets and time pressures; Getting our head around what we wanted in the site. I’m a very visual person, I know what I want when I seen it but don’t ask me to explain it!! So that was a learning experience for me! Working with the EU funding. Procurement, Timescales, Publicity, Monitoring, Negotiation etc…all very frustrating Timescale of the project and doing the e-learning element of the work. As a result of slippage within the programme, delay with the letter of offers, getting everything in place.
  4. Determining our target audience which was a new generation of learners, most likely overseas, with an interest with border conflicts in the world Thrashing out the content that we needed, attempted to marrying it with the other work that the project was doing. Ensuring that it was interesting for people to want to take part in the course, and ensuring that we werent duplicating anything else that had been done elsewhere in Ireland or the UK Ensuring that the site used colours that was consistent with the project, was easily navigable, visually appealing etc
  5. Peace IV: Specific interest in Young People and Shared Education. Opportunity to expand on this work and enhance it
