Goal : specific outcome that players will work to achieve – there is a sense of purpose Rules : place limitations on how players achieve the goal – removing or limiting obvious ways of getting to the goal, the rules push players to use creative and strategic thinking A feedback system : tells players how close they are to achieving the goal – points tally, levels, progress bar Voluntary participation : everyone playing the game knowingly and willingly accepts the goal, the rules and the feedback system. Freedom to enter or leave the game at will ensures that challenges are experienced in safety and with pleasure
