2. DEFINITIONS
• Primary Research: research in which you create by
yourself with no input from other sources.
• Secondary Research: research in which you refer to
another source which created the research.
• Qualitative Research: research which is textual. Generally
will give things such as emotions and peoples opinion.
• Quantitative Research: research which can be turned in to
data. Things that are based on a number system or a
multiple choice question which can be put into things
such as graphs.
3. IMPORTANCE OF CARRYING
OUT RESEARCH
It is important to carry out research before creating a media
product as it helps with ensuring that you maintain and
understand the conventions whilst creating the production.
For my production, I had to do lots of research in to the
teaser trailer form to make sure that I can properly replicate
the form so it is recognisable by the public. Additionally, the
research in to the action genre also meant that I knew what
conventions we could carry out and also some that we could
challenge.
4. FORMS OF RESEARCH
CARRIED OUT FOR AS
Research conducted for AS:
• Genre conventions
• Representation of gender in thriller films
• Narrative theories
• Analysis of similar texts
• BBFC guidelines research
• Audience profile
• Process of film funding
• Title sequence analysis
• How are films distributed
• Thriller genre market analysis
• Techniques I like
• Target audience research
5. FORMS OF RESEARCH
CARRIED OUT FOR A2
Research conducted for A2:
• Genre conventions
• Teaser trailer introduction
• Genre introduction
• Timeline analysis
• Genre conventions in teaser trailers
• Different narrative structures
• Narrative theories
• Analysis of similar texts
• Representation of characters
• Film studio research
• Genre market analysis
• The commissioning process
• Regulations
• Audience Theories
• Audience profile
• Process of film funding
• Target audience research
6. THE MOST USEFUL
RESEARCH TASK
I believe that the most helpful element of research is the
research into similar texts. This helps both understand
similar conventions of both the genre and the form. It also
helps for gaining inspiration for the actual production as you
can make it more creative based on what’s creative in the
texts I watched.
7. HOW COULD I OF USED DIGITAL
MEDIA MORE IN CARRYING OUT
RESEARCH
Within my research I might have been able to implement
some more digital media in terms of the diversity of the
selection. Perhaps using other platforms such as vimeo
rather than exclusively sticking to Youtube. However, all of
my research was completely digital and done online, and
there was very little that I could of done to of used digital
media more. I could of perhaps implemented a digital media
segment into my A2 audience research like I did for As to
achieve more vigorous research but besides this I believe
there was very little I could of done to implement more digital
media.
8. WHAT DOES
CREATIVITY MEAN?
1. the state or quality of being
creative.
2. the ability to transcend
traditional ideas, rules,
patterns, relationships, or
the like, and to create
meaningful new ideas,
forms, methods,
interpretations, etc.;
originality,
progressiveness, or
imagination: the need for
creativity in modern
industry; creativity in the
performing arts.
9. CREATIVITY IN OUR
AS & A2 PRODUCTION
For our AS media production, we intended to create
originality within the narrative by going against typical
conventions of what you expect from the main characters.
Our ‘damsel in distress’ is actually killed at the beginning
which goes against convention. In terms of technical aspects
such as camera work, there’s very little creativity in this
regard as most of the shots are still. However, the A2
production focuses more on the camerawork in terms of
creativity, which is evidence by all the focus pulls and
handheld shots. The A2 however has compromised this with
a rather bland and cliché narrative.
