• When CO2 from factories, power
plants, and automobiles go up into
the atmosphere 1/3 of the CO2
dissolves into the ocean
• The pH decreases and the
acidity increases
• CO2 mixing with the seawater
creates carbonic acid
• Carbonic acid reduces the level of
calcium carbonate which hurts
crustaceans and coral.
• Chain reaction from phytoplankton
all the way to whales
http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical
-issues-ocean-acidification/?source=A-to-Z
• We are the main culprits of this problem
• Cars burn fuels which releases CO2 into the atmosphere
• Factory emissions, production, and other energy consuming day to day
events.

•We know today Ocean Acidification
is harming marine ecosystems.
•5 years ago, Ocean Acidification
was not thought of as a huge
problem.
•Further research showed
otherwise.
• Since the industrial revolution
the pH has gone down
0.1 and could fall another 0.5
by 2100.

• CO2 changes the chemistry of the oceans
• Very high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere get absorbed
by the worlds oceans
• When too much CO2 is absorbed, the oceans start to
create carbonic acid
• More than 500 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere does not
create a stable living environment
• Excess CO2 in the atmosphere comes from Cars and
Factories burning either non-sustainable fossil fuels or
coal
• Reduce CO2 emissions by passing policies that limit carbon
dioxide pollution.
• Use current laws and regulations to stop pollutants that
worsen the effects of ocean acidification.
• Invest in research to see and predict how species will be
affected
• Use knowledge we have now to protect fisheries and preserve
marine species.

• This video was a great summarization, but took a lots of class time to watch. In the long run, the movie was not worth the amount of time we took
watching it.
