Year 7 students from Hawkesdale P12 College use a variety of methods to separate a mixture of rice, iron filings, salt and sand.

3. Step 1.
Separating the rice from
the rest.
In this picture it shows
how we had to pour the
mixture into a sieve over
a beaker. When we shook
the mixture through
everything fell into the
beaker but not the rice.
When it was just the rice
left we poured it all into a
small beaker.

4. Step 2.
Pulling out the Iron Filings.
In this step we used a magnet
wrapped in gladwrap to
separate the Iron Filings from
the salt and sand. We covered
the magnet with gladwrap
because the Iron sticks to the
magnets very strongly. As you
can see in the picture when
we lowered the magnet into
the mixture and all of the Iron
came out. Then we pulled the
Iron off the magnet and put it
into it’s own little beaker.

5. The Rice and Iron
Filings.
Now that we had
the rice and iron
separated and
clean, we sat
them on a tray
and then
continued with
the process.

6. Step 3.
Filtering the salt through the
sand.
In this step we had to mix the
salt and sand together then
add some water. Once we
added the water we poured
the mix into a funnel that had
filter paper inside it. The water
and the salt filtered through
the paper then leaving it in the
beaker and leaving the sand in
the filter paper. We then put
the sand into a small beaker
and that was finished with the
sand.

7. Step 4.
Boiling the salty water.
In this step we boiled the
water that had the salt in
it. The process is to turn
on the gas, light the
Bunsen burner, then wait
for the water to start
evaporating. Once the
water has all evaporated
you will be left with a
bowl full of cooked salt!
