5. Exponent Rules
• Let ‘a ’ be a nonzero number and let ‘n’ be a
positive integer,
A nonzero number to the zero power is 1:
a0 = 1 (a = 0)
20 = 1 (-2)0 = 1
a-n is the reciprocal of an: therefore
a-n = 1 / an , (a = 0 ) so 2-3 = 1/ 23
an = 1/a-n 23 = 1/ 2-3
