Battles, Conspiracies and Executions
The Battle of Gaugamela
You get to discover this for
yourself!
GOOD LUCK!
Alexander takes
Babylon.
SOURCES:
- Quintus Curtius
Rufus
- Babylonian
Astronomer‟s Eye
Witness Account
Astronomical Diary Quintus Curtius Rufus
Alexander would have
seen Mazaeus‟ cavalry
coming through this gate.
A marvelous site that
obviously affected
Alexander.
This city is handed over to Alexander
by Mazaeus.
 Mazaeus came to Alexander with his grown up children as a “Suppliant”
 Surrendered the city to Alexander.
 Alexander is greeted by the city‟s occupants as their new King.
 “Bagophanes had carpeted the whole road with flowers and garlands and set up at
intervals on both sides silver altars heaped not just with frankincense but with all
manner of perfumes. Following him were his gifts - herds of cattle and horses, and
lions, too, and leopards, carried along in cages.”
 Mazaeus is made Satrap of Babylonia under Alexander.
 The first Persian to receive such an important office.
 His surrender and humane treatment sets an example for other leaders.
 Susa is surrendered to Alexander by Abulites.
Alexander the Great
“King of Kings”
Ariobarzanes
“Satrap of Persia”VS
- Alexander either did not send scouts or they
were captured.
- Alexander‟s troops saw people who they
mistakenly thought were fleeing refugees.
- The pass narrows as it goes along.
- Ariobarzanes ambushes the lead of
Alexander‟s column forcing a retreat.
- Alexander‟s dead are left on the battlefield.
- Implausible tale resembling Ephilates at battle
of Thermopylae.
 Ariobarzanes survives the battle and flees to
Persepolis.
 He is turned away by the commander of the city who
already knew the outcome of the Battle of the Persian Gate
and was convinced Alexander was invincible.
 Alexander takes Persepolis after defeating a remnant of
the Persian Army left from Guagamela.
 What do you think Alexander did here?
Alexander burns a number of
buildings in the Palace.
He also allows his men to loot the city.
Revenge for the burning of Athens in
480 BC.
When he returned to Persepolis later,
Alexander felt bad about the
destruction.
 Alexander gives Darius a state funeral with
all of the Regal Amenities.
 Alexander orders war on Bessus.
 Usurper
 Regicide
 War will take them further into Asia where
they know nothing about the land.
Why?
Parmenion‟s Son
 Instrumental in nearly every successful
battle.
 Son of Parmenion
 Previously accused of Treachery
 Alexander forgave him.
 He is accused of plotting to kill
Alexander, and of not reporting a
previous attempt.
 Alexander initially forgives him.

 “Philotas only said to the king that
the bitter hatred of his enemies had
triumphed over Alexander‟s
kindness.”
Evidence!
 Letter from father to son.
 „first of all take care of yourselves
and of your people – that is how
we shall accomplish our purpose‟
 Torture!!
