2. Communication
• Occurs through seeing, hearing speaking, reading,
writing, signing, and gesturing (110).
• Language is the formal code of abstract symbols used by
a group of people to communicate (111).
• Speech- primarily the forming and production of oral
language.
• Enhanced by gestures, manual signs, picture symbols, and written
symbols (112).
3. Speech-Language Impairment
• When a person is unable to interact, basic needs can go
unmet and social interactions become strained to the
point of isolation and personal frustration (114).
• It is imperative that communication skills be developed so
students can interact with their environments (114).
• Augmentative and Alternative Communication:
• Combination of communication tools available to an individual,
including any speech, vocalizations, gestures, and communication
behaviors related to specific methods and devices
• May supplement, enhance, or replace conventional communication
methods
• Augmentative-helps the student use the communication they have
• Alternative- bypasses the oral system (114).
