- As we have seen in the six strategies explained during the last weeks, there is a sest of strategies for resolving conflict that consists of opening it up, encouraging it to unfold, and seeing what lies hidden inside. This includes understanding the culture and context in which the conflict occured; Listening actively, empathetically, and responsively to your opponent; Acknoeledging and integrating intense emotions; Searching beneath the surface for hidden meanings; Separating people from problems, positions from interests, and the future from the past. And not rewarding but learning from difficult behaviors. Now we are going to look at a second set of strategies consistis of shutting the conflict down, encouraging it to end, and finding practical solutions for the problems yo uncover. This includes: Finding creative solutions to the problems that you reveal, Strategically planning how you will avoid them in the future, And collaboratively negotiating your ongoing disagreements. Doing so means Generating options and criteria, Reaching consensus, planning and committing to action as part of a process that will end in resolution, completion, and closure – or, if not, in an agreement to disagree.
