Then we move onto the Egyptians…This excerpt from the Book of the Dead depicts the soul of the deceased first being led by Anubis. Then the god weighs the deceased’s heart (depicting his soul) to see if he is worthy of entering the afterlife. Finally, we see Horus handing the departed over to Osiris, the lord of the underworld. Remember, to the Egyptians, this was nonfiction.
- Constructed in AD 113 at the order of the Senate, The column graphically depicts the Emperor’s victories against the Dacians for 625 feet up the 98 foot pillar…
- The Bayeux Tapestry, actually an embroidery, is 231 feet long and shows the history of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman takeover of England. It was begun as early as 1067 and is an invaluable primary source document of the history of the Norman Conquest (from the perspective of the Normans, of course). This particular scene shows the climax of the Battle where King Harold is cut down by a galloping horseman. He is NOT the one plucking the arrow from his eye (as has been mistakenly assumed by some). He is the one right under the “interfectus est.”

The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry and Cartoon Guide to Genetics by Larry Gonick provide an easily digestible introduction to both these fields. Larry Gonick will show up again later.

Rick Geary: Treasury of Victorian Murder series. The Fatal Bullet covers the assassination of Ohio’s own Pres. James Garfield. You’ll have a whole new appreciation of Garfield after reading this and realize the lost opportunities presented by Garfield’s bungled medical treatment and subsequent death.

- Joe Sacco is a Maltese comics artist who’s first book was on Palestine. He also filed dispatches for The Guardian, a British newspaper, in comics form from the war in Iraq. Guy Delisle is a Montreal-based Canadian comics artist who in his Pyongyang and Shenzhen documents his time in North Korea and China working with an animation company and does a wonderful showing the inner workings of those two countries when it comes to dealing with foreigners in their midsts.
