This document summarizes the general characteristics of the Romantic Age in literature. It provides context that Romanticism was a revival period between 1798-1832. 3.  Characteristics of The Age :
1. Individualism:
 No set pattern
 The form and subject matter are different or treated
differently so endless variety
2. Free play of Imagination & Emotion :
 “ Casement, opening on the foam
Of perilous seas, in fairy lands forlorn”. - Coleridge
3. Humanitarian outlook:
 Reasons replaced by Emotion.
 Sympathy for fellow men.

 Romantic poet Transferred their interest from town to
countrty life.
“ Nature never did betray,
The heart that loves her”.
5. Interest in the past and the Exotic:
 Escaped to the remote in time (medievalism) and place
 Bishop Percy's “ Reliques of Ancient English poetry”.
 Various elements in work of Keats, Coleridge, and Scott

 Keats as the supreme lover of beauty says, “ A thing of
beauty is joy forever ”.

8. Subjectivity:

 Lucas says, “ It was an expression of „id‟.

 „ The rime of Ancient Mariner‟ by Coleridge and
„Isabella‟, are such poems with supernaturalism.
