13. Rajiv Gandhi Accident Insurance Scheme
• Rajiv Gandhi Vidyarthi Suraksha Yojana
• The scheme, wherein the government has already paid
the Oriental Insurance Company a cover premium for 2
crores and 85 Lakh students across the state
• It is also available for those already on the school and
college rolls.

14. Rajiv Gandhi Accident Insurance
Scheme
• It offers benefits against accidental death (Rs
30,000),
• Permanent disablement (Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000
depending on the nature of injury),
• Medical expenses for treatment following an
accident (Rs 2000 to Rs 10,000),
• Loss of books due to accident (Rs 350),
• Reimbursement of fees if the student is unable to
attend classes due to an accident (Rs 650),
• Loss of bicycle (up to Rs 1500) and
• Loss of spectacles (up to Rs 750).

15. Health check up every 2 years and free treatment for
major and minor illnesses.

16. Scholarship programme and
exams
• To encourage students to perform well
scholarship exams are help every year in the
month of March
• Scholarship exams are for children enrolled in
class 4th and class 7th
• Merit Holders in these exams are entitled to
receive monetary benefit.

17. Financial incentive for students.
• For encouraging the students to attend school esp.
Girl students the MCGM given certain financial
incentives
• Rupees 2500 Fixed deposit to girl students is given
when they pass out of VII standard and it income
can be enchased in the next 5 years when they
reach XII standard.
• These will help to improve attendance and
retention.

18. Computer Literacy Programme
• IIT Bombay has developed Self-taught, spoken
tutorial videos in Hindi, Marathi, English, Kannad,
Guajarati , Bengali and Tamil languages that teach
students Basic IT skills
• Students can learn to type a text document, edit and
save it as well as they learn Basics of Excel sheet
and presentation preparation
• Citizens Association for Child Rights-CACR has
partnered with IIT for implementation of this program
in Mumbai

21. Virtual Classroom teaching-- recently introduced
• The BMC /MCGM has installed a virtual education
system to attract more students.
• The Virtual Classroom was introduced as a pilot
project in few schools, after its success in South
Mumbai schools it was introduced in more schools.
• Equipment installed in more than 400 schools
• Virtual classrooms are becoming the new medium of
instruction to reach multiple schools at the same time,
take questions and even give demonstrations all in
'Real Time' without CITIZENS ASSOCIATION FOR CHILD

24. Other Facilities: Libraries, science
laboratories, etc
• As per Right To Education Act-RTE every schools
should have a reading room/library.
• A Science Laboratory
• A computer room with working computers exist in most
schools .
• The computers are donated by corporate s or trusts

25. Semi English Training
Since the demand for English medium schools is
increasing , BMC has started Semi English classes as
a pilot project this year
About 2400 BMC school teachers will be trained by
the British Council this year and this will continue for
the next four years.
Effectively 9600 teachers out of the 12,000+ teachers
will be trained.

27. How can people help?
A. Get together, start observing neighbourhood schools, be a
part
of
school
management
committees-SMC
as
empowered under the RTE. Ensure parents participation in
SMC meetings, which will help in empowering the parents.
B. Create awareness
is very important issue of ensuring
every child in school as per RTE.
C. Question the hierarchy in education department, our
elected representatives, corporator, etc.
D. Ensure activation and accountability in the system rather
than creating parallel systems, ensuring every child will
have access to free and quality education.
