24. FINDINGS
• Developer is king
• Small, unknown developers can have a huge market impact
• App markets are location- and trend sensitive
• More and more developers choose to go multiple stores
25. CONSEQUENCES
• Facilitate both large and small developers properly:
• Easy store access
• Short lead-times
• Limited legal hassle
• Low or no entry fees
• Provide quality tools (both SDK and evaluation tools)
• Good revenue share.
• Accept the fact that developers have freedom of choice in platform. Don’t try to prevent
the multi-platform growth, embrace it.
27. ROAD AHEAD
• Store fragmentation will continue to exist
• Itwill probably even grow (tablets, TV’s and other devices are
entering the app market domain as well)
• Best dev platform = best developers = best content = winner
of the game.

consumers are buying phones not strictly because of hardware but also because of apps. If there is a proper channel for consumers, they will obviously download and pay for apps.
The big guys have noticed this is a selling point for consumers as well.
40+ mobile app stores - even more depending on the definition. Consumers have a lot of choices today. More stores however, means there is greater fragmentation. We’ll get back to that in a moment though.
Here’s the amount of choices in applications that consumers have. These are the 7 biggest device stores. This represents a selection of 5 countries (US, Canada, UK, Spain and Germany) and is August 2010 data. Apple is obviously the biggest, however Android is making inroads and it as 80K apps. Blackberry also just announced they have hit 10K apps in Blackberry App World. Windows is still relatively small but they are launching a brand new store next month in October. Any difference between Android apps is dependent on what countries you are focused on . Any differences with Apple come into play with how you take into account iPhone vs iPad apps.
Well known publishers in the app stores and they have a lot of applications across multiple stores.
However, meet Samo from Slovenia. He’s a computer programmer who founded Outfit 7 in Oct 2009 - less than a year ago...
he developed a free Talking Tom Cat app for the IOS4 and Android. You can beat up the cat, give him drinks and make him talk. 10 million consumers around the world have been using this game in the past 2.5 months. Samo is generating revenue through ads - and this is only one his apps.
A hit on 3 devices!
There is some serious revenue being generated here.
Here’s the big guys - and there Samo in the top 5
And here’s the Outfit 7 team - total number of developers: 5
Vuvuzeula app recorded in studio...
They now have a partnership with AdMob and am making some serious revenue. This is 2 guys who developed an app in 1 day!
sporting events, fashion, news, etc.
An app for ordering a taxi in Turkey - only popular and among top apps in that country but it’s available worldwide...
There are big differences between content popularity between different countries.
There is an emerging trend among app developers - they are distributing across multiple platforms - typically 2 or more stores. This data is again showing only the top 7 device app stores. In reality, if you factor in all the others, it is even higher.
Wrap up
In the end, all app stores must facilitate and cultivate both large and small developers. The app stores that execute this the best will win because they will have the most content - and will therefore be a greater consumer draw.
Fragmentation will get worse with the introduction of more tablets into the market. There will be more opportunities to have tablet only stores, for example and TV devices.
