Proverbs 16:23 The heart of the wise teacheth his
mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
A wise person is careful about what he says for he
wants to help, not hurt. He does not blurt out
whatever comes to his mind. As a result his lips
promote instruction.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.
3. 3
Not every thought is worth thinking,
much less speaking.
Sometimes one needs to
put his thumb in his mouth
and say nothing.
4. 4
24 Pleasant words are as an
honeycomb, sweet to the soul,
and health to the bones.
Pleasant words need to be
spoken; all others are
better left unsaid.
1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NIV) Love is patient, love is
kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
5. 5
25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Romans 8 6-7 For to be carnally minded
is death; but to be spiritually minded is
life and peace. Because the carnal
mind is enmity against God: for it is not
subject to the law of God, neither
indeed can be.
6. 6
26 He that laboreth , laboreth for himself; for his
mouth craveth it of him.
(NIV) 26 The laborer's appetite works for him; his
hunger drives him on.
To feed or take care of
a lazy man promotes
laziness.
Each should earn his own way
in as much as he is able.
7. 7
27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips
there is as a burning fire.
There is a man who loves evil and
will always find it.
He is always causing trouble with his mouth.
(TLB) An evil man sows strife; gossip separates
the best of friends.
8. 8
28 A froward (deliberately wrong) man soweth
strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
{27-28} Ungodly men bestow more pains to do
mischief than would be needful to do good.
The whisperer separates friends: what a hateful, but
how common a character!
Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.
9. 9
29 A violent man enticeth his neighbor, and leadeth
him into the way that is not good. 30 He shutteth his
eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he
bringeth evil to pass.
There are those who are not content to do evil, they
must lead others into trouble with them.
They refuse to see the error of their ways.
10. 10
Living to an old age is nothing to be proud of,
unless one has learned Wisdom and lives right.
31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found
in the way of righteousness.
A fool is a fool, whether he
be young or old.
11. 11
32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a
city.
James 1 19-20 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let
every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to
wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the
righteousness of God. Not ever.
A violent temper is a
curse; learn self-control.
12. 12
33 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole
disposing thereof is of the LORD.
We can’t always choose our lot in life --
What family or culture we are born into,
Whether we are pretty or homely,
Smart or not, rich or poor.
But we can choose to put our lives in God’s
Hand, and He can shape us as He Will,
No matter where we started.
