It involves structuring the content in a logical and coherent manner to facilitate understanding and communication with the reader. Effective organization ensures that the writing flows smoothly, guiding the reader through the text from the introduction to the conclusion. Here's a breakdown of key elements of organization in writing: Introduction: The introduction serves as the opening of the piece, where the main topic or thesis statement is introduced. It provides context, background information, and sets the tone for the rest of the writing. Body: The body of the writing contains the main content and supporting details. It is structured into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect or subtopic related to the main idea. The body may be organized chronologically, by order of importance, by comparison and contrast, or in any other logical sequence that best presents the information. Transitions: Transitions are used to smoothly connect ideas, sentences, and paragraphs within the text. They help maintain coherence and guide the reader through the flow of the writing. Transition words and phrases indicate relationships between different parts of the text, such as cause and effect, comparison, contrast, addition, and so on. Conclusion: The conclusion wraps up the writing by summarizing the main points and restating the thesis or main idea. It may also provide closure or offer implications, recommendations, or reflections related to the topic discussed. Overall Structure: The overall structure of the writing depends on the genre, purpose, and audience. Different types of writing, such as narratives, essays, reports, or research papers, may have distinct organizational structures tailored to their specific requirements. Effective organization enhances clarity, coherence, and readability, making it easier for readers to comprehend and engage with the content. It helps writers effectively communicate their ideas and arguments, leading to more impactful and persuasive writing.

The meter (m) is the basic unit of length in the metric system, and a nanometer is one billionth of a meter. It's easy for us to visualize a meter; that’s about 3 feet. But a billionth of that? It’s a scale so different from what we're used to that it's difficult to imagine. What Are Common Size Units, and Where is the Nanoscale Relative to Them? Table 1 below shows some common size units and their various notations (exponential, number, English) and examples of objects that illustrate about how big each unit is. Table 1. Common size units and examples. Unit Magnitude as an exponent (m) Magnitude as a number (m) English Expression About how big? Meter 100 1 One A bit bigger than a yardstick Centimeter 10-2 0.01 One Hundredth Width of a fingernail Millimeter 10-3 0.001 One Thousandth Thickness of a dime Micrometer 10-6 0.000001 One Millionth A single cell Nanometer 10-9 0.000000001 One Billionth 10 hydrogen atoms lined up Angstrom 10-10 0.0000000001 A large atom Nanoscience is the study and development of materials and structures in the range of 1 nm (10-9 m) to 100 nanometers (100 x 10-9 = 10-7 m) and the unique properties that arise at that scale. That is small! At the nanoscale, we are manipulating objects that are more than one-millionth the size of the period at the end of this sentence. What if We Measured the Size of Various Objects in Terms of Nanometers? A typical atom is anywhere from 0.1 to 0.5 nanometers in diameter. DNA molecules are about 2.5 nanometers wide. Most proteins are about 10 nanometers wide, and a typical virus is about 100 nanometers wide. A bacterium is about 1000 nanometers. Human cells, such as red blood cells, are about 10,000 nanometers across. At 100,000 nanometers, the width of a human hair seems gigantic. The head of a pin is about a million nanometers wide. An adult man who is 2 meters tall (6 feet 5 inches) is about 2 billion nanometers tall! 2-S2 So is That What Nanoscience is All About––Smallness? No, smallness alone doesn’t account for all the interest in the nanoscale. Nanoscale structures push the envelope of physics, moving into the strange world of quantum mechanics. For nanoparticles, gravity hardly matters due to their small mass. However, the Brownian motion of these particles now becomes important. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
