Task 1: Rushes Log
This task will help you decide which clips will be most suitable to meet the clients
brief. Rushes logs will show a full appreciation of the possibilities and limitations of
shots. All paperwork will be clear and organised to a near-professional
standard.
You must check each rush and offer a description of the action in each clip. In your
description you MUST use camera specific terminology to describe the shot. You
must then decide whether this clip could be used in the final construction and give a
reason as to why you have made that decision.
Evidence will be the completed table.

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
The evidence for this will be a scanned image of hand written
annotation ORyou may copy the scripthere and digitally annotate
and highlight.
Task 3: Edit decision list
In this task you will provide evidence of you incorporating your rushes into your final
promotional video. This is a document to help you plan the structure of your edit.
Your edit decision lists will provide a fully detailed blueprint for the final piece.
You must include lots of detail to reach the distinction grades. All paperwork will be
clear and organised to a near-professional standard.
The evidence you mustshow is a table such as the one below
which detailing the clip number, the starttime and end time, the
type of shot, description and then detail any transitions or effects
[including text captions]you will use on this clip. You may also
wish to detailany editing techniques you are planning on using.
Task 4: Clarifying the purpose of the work with a client or director
In this task you will provide evidence of you meeting with the client to
clarify the purpose of the work.
We interviewedthe client; Craig Beattie, and asked various
questionsso that we could get a clear indication and vision of what
exactly he wanted and was expectingfor the promotionalvideo for
the college.Questionssuch as ‘who is the targetaudience?’were
asked and Craig answered by saying notonly do we want to attract
year 11’s who are looking to apply at colleges, butwe also want to
attractparentand guardiansso that they have involvementin
which college their child will be going too. ‘How long would like the
duration of the video to be?’was also asked and he asked
explainedhow it should be in between 2-3 minutes because
anything after 3 minutes will lose the concentration and attention of
Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
the viewer and will stop them watching as they will get bored. We
also asked if he would like music and sound effects in this video
and he responded by saying he would like music but it has to fit in
and link with the theme and clips of the video. He also explained
that he doesn’twant it too be quietor too loud, and he wants us to
‘duck’the audio, which means thatwhen someone is speaking, for
example an interview with a student, that they can be heard over
the music becausewe have lowered the volume of the music. We
asked him if he would like captions to representthe college on
particularclips and he responded with “yes, but make sure there
isn’t a caption on every clip and to make sure there isn’t too much
writing for the viewer to read.In addition,we asked ifhe wanted the
college logo to be included n the video and he said, “Yes,I would
like the logo to appearat the beginning and the end of the video to
representthe college throughoutthe video.” With every question
that we asked,Craig gave a well explained and detailed response
so that we could make notes so when it came to editing the video,
we knew exactly whathe wanted.InterviewingCraig was a huge
help as it allowed me to get a clear vision of what exactly he wanted
for the video.
Task 5: Preparing to edit: importing clips; bins;timelines; storage
and folder management; online and offline editing; formats;
resolution
In this task you will provide evidence of all of the specificelements listed
above.
The evidence you will provide will be screen shots ofeach of these
preparation techniques together with discussion of the technique
and analysis of how this feature will help the smooth production of
the completed promotionalvideo.
Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
Task 6: PRODUCTIONDIARY
In this task you will update the progress of your edit EACH LESSON.As
well as discussionof progress, you should also include screenshots as
evidence to show how you have used preparationtechniques (as listed
above) to help construct your product.
Save regularroughcuts of your promotionalvideo and gather
further feedback from clientand targetaudience.
Date ProgressReview Areas to
improve
30/11/15 I decided on the music track I was going to
use in the background of my promotional
video. I also uploaded all of the clips to
Final Cut Pro.
1/12/15 I began placing some of the clips that I
definitely were going to use and knew
where I was going to put them, for example
the very first clip which is the logo of the
college.Furthermore I also uploaded the
voiceoverto the Final Cut Pro and started
trimming it so I could start linking the
voiceoverwith the clips.
3/12/15 I now have several clips on my timeline and
I have been trimming each clip to the length
of which I want them and placing them the
Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
correctplace and matching them with the
voiceover.
4/12/15 I am still just including clips onto my timeline
and placing them in the correct place and
matching with the voiceover. Also, I have
been trying to cut the clips and pace the
clips with the beats of the songs.
7/12/15 Now that I have all of my clips on my
timeline for my promotionalvideo, I began
adding transitions in between clips. I also
started adding captions and titles on some
of the clips to briefly explain what is
happening in the shot. For example subject
names on the clips with that subject.
Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
11/12/15 Now that I have completelyfinished my
promotional video, I had to save it to my
desktop and then upload it onto YouTube.
But before I could upload it, I had to selecta
certain codec format. I have kept it as the
default format of Apple ProRes 422.

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques the viewer and will stop them watching as they will get bored. We also asked if he would like music and sound effects in this video and he responded by saying he would like music but it has to fit in and link with the theme and clips of the video. He also explained that he doesn’twant it too be quietor too loud, and he wants us to ‘duck’the audio, which means thatwhen someone is speaking, for example an interview with a student, that they can be heard over the music becausewe have lowered the volume of the music. We asked him if he would like captions to representthe college on particularclips and he responded with “yes, but make sure there isn’t a caption on every clip and to make sure there isn’t too much writing for the viewer to read.In addition,we asked ifhe wanted the college logo to be included n the video and he said, “Yes,I would like the logo to appearat the beginning and the end of the video to representthe college throughoutthe video.” With every question that we asked,Craig gave a well explained and detailed response so that we could make notes so when it came to editing the video, we knew exactly whathe wanted.InterviewingCraig was a huge help as it allowed me to get a clear vision of what exactly he wanted for the video. Date ProgressReview Areas to improve 30/11/15 I decided on the music track I was going to use in the background of my promotional video. I also uploaded all of the clips to Final Cut Pro. 1/12/15 I began placing some of the clips that I definitely were going to use and knew where I was going to put them, for example the very first clip which is the logo of the college.Furthermore I also uploaded the voiceoverto the Final Cut Pro and started trimming it so I could start linking the voiceoverwith the clips. 3/12/15 I now have several clips on my timeline and I have been trimming each clip to the length of which I want them and placing them the
  • 16. Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques correctplace and matching them with the voiceover. 4/12/15 I am still just including clips onto my timeline and placing them in the correct place and matching with the voiceover. Also, I have been trying to cut the clips and pace the clips with the beats of the songs. 7/12/15 Now that I have all of my clips on my timeline for my promotionalvideo, I began adding transitions in between clips. I also started adding captions and titles on some of the clips to briefly explain what is happening in the shot. For example subject names on the clips with that subject.
  • 17. Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques 11/12/15 Now that I have completelyfinished my promotional video, I had to save it to my desktop and then upload it onto YouTube. But before I could upload it, I had to selecta certain codec format. I have kept it as the default format of Apple ProRes 422.
