One of the most
powerful women in
History
The last Pharaoh of Egypt
If the nose ofCleopatra had been
shorter, the whole face of the earth
would have been changed
Blas Pascal (1623-1662)
Cleopatra VII Philopator was born in 69 BC
and died 30 BC .
She was the 3rd daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes,
who ruled the throne in Egypt until his death in 51
BC. Although she was an Egyptian queen, she
was not even
Egyptian. She
was a Macedonian
Greek, the last of
the Ptolemies .
This was a royal line
which descended
directly from
Alexander theGreat.
Cleopatra taught herself politics, from watching her
father in the Egyptian Court and in the Library
of Alexandria. She spoke 9 languages
including Egyptian.
She was the first
Ptolemy Pharaoh
every to speak
Egyptian
She tried to keep Egypt’s
freedom and independence.
She wanted Egypt to be as
beautiful as she was, or at
least as beautiful as she
thought she was.
Also she thought her father
was not a good ruler so she
wanted to be better.
She came to power at age
15, married to her
brother, Ptolemy XIII,
also pharaoh.
The two began a civil war
in 48 B.C and she
exiled to Syria.
With the aid of the Roman
leader Julius Caesar,
Cleopatra defeated her
brother and kept the
throne, this time sharing it
with another brother,
Ptolemy XIV, to whom
she was not married.
She went with Caesar to
Rome and had a child
soon after, naming it
Ceasarion.
After Caesar's murder in
44, Cleopatra
returned to Egypt.
She looked for the
support of Caesar's
ally, Marc Antony, and
won his favor as well.
They married and had
twins, Alexander Helius
and Cleopatra Selene
(married to king Juba II
of Mauretania),
Ptolemy Philadelphus.
She threw all her military
support behind Antony in
his war against Octavian,
Caesar's adopted son, but
it wasn't enough.
Octavian and his allies
defeated Antony and
Cleopatra at the Battle of
Actium in 31BC.
Marc Antony
died in 30BC.
Cleopatra died in 30 BC, most likely by snake.
The 2 snakes that could have killed her were the
Egyptian cobra or the asp.
It was a rumor that she committed suicide as she was
getting old, which was something she hated for she
did not want to be ugly;
but it was actually
because her husband,
Marc Antony had died.
The long-lost burial crypt of Marc Antony and
Cleopatra, remains unknown somewhere near
Alexandria,
Egypt.
Cleopatra invented make-up. Technically,
Egyptians invented it, but Cleopatra
revolutionized it. She was extremely vain and
cared about her looks,
so she always used
make-up. Then, make-up
consisted of
powders which came
from stones and other
natural things.
