Bats

2. The gray bat’s fur is grey. The bat is 3 to 4 inches long. The
wingspan is about 12 inches.

3. Gray bats eat beetles, flies,and moths.They
also eat flying insects.

4. They live in Southeastern United States in caves
near rivers or lakes.

5. They give birth to young in late May. The
newborns are quite large. The young begin
to fly 3 to 5 weeks after birth.

6. They stay in swarms and go out at night
because most predators are asleep.

7. Their enemies are humans, poisonous insects, owls and birds.

8. Don’t go into bat caves and disturb them. We must
protect their natural habitats and not destroy them.

9. A kind of disease has killed millions of
bats. Humans explode caves causing
young bats to fall. They can live up to
16 years in the wild and they use
echolocation to “see” in the night.
