Welcome to Geography!
Take suggestions. Then discuss in table groups and quiz each other – do you speak any other language? Which? How many?
Link to Rights Respect Responsibility / RRSA
Introduce students to the upside down map. Orient them. Practise together first. Can use grid refs as practise too.
Quick orientation explanation first. Thenquiz in pairs. Use an atlas and / or tablets for some quiz and tour of the world work. Pick 5 areas of the school, students to identify from the map / atlas what countries this corresponds to. Then using atlas / tablet they research that country to find language spoken here, and how to say hello etc,. Mark on the map what location it is. Complete the grid.
Year 7 or 8. Atlas or Win8 device / mobile.
For year 9 – link to development unit, use development data to prove MEDC or LEDC. Challenge stereotypes.
Discussion – link to school signage, difficult finding areas, language barriers in class, barriers to learning, right to an education, etc,.
‘What have you learnt?’
Exit plenary – stamp their books with the ‘mobile@priory’ stamp as a visa exit stamp. Students must demonstrate increased awareness of languages across the world, language barrier, links to Unicef charter.e.g. 50 words to explain the links between language and right to learn, 3 facts about the countries ‘visited’ on the world map, etc,. Depending on ability.
Goodbye!
Extension – card sort, cut up languages and can they match up to the correct phrase in the correct language? Iceland and Swahili
