Unfortunately, despite the importance of clear communication, too many scientific presentations at conferences and workshops are confusing, abstract, and boring. In this short workshop, participants learn several key strategies and tips that will make their professional presentations just a little bit better than the rest. We discuss strategies for presentation planning, show how basic design principles can create more memorable slides, and point towards an outstanding set online tools and resources. Become a presentation superstar! Scott St. George is Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota and a Resident Fellow at UMN's Institute on the Environment. Prior to joining the faculty at Minnesota, he was a research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada. Scott shares some of his experiences ‘doing presentations differently’ at conferences, outreach opportunities, and the classroom.

I watched 1800+ TED talks. I watched all those published on ted.com. Why? Because I am a TED addict. And because each of these talks reminds me that storytelling is essential in everything we do. Facts are important, but facts alone have no value. They have to be consumed to worthwhile. Stories make this happen by getting us involved. This applies to researching novel ways, it applies to creating products, it applies to leading people, it applies to educating kids, and it applies to marriage proposals. Essentially, it applies to anything worth doing. Storytelling is what makes stories happen. But, storytelling is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learnt. For example, an easy way to learn is to listen to good examples. Like TED talks. But, there are many ways to learn. And, there are even more ways to apply. It only takes us to invest in it. Why? Because storytelling is essential.

I use this set of slides for a talk I gave at ESUG 2014. Abstract: Moose is a platform for software and data analysis (http://moosetechnology.org). It runs on Pharo and it can help you figure out problems around software systems. In this talk, I show several real-life examples of how custom tools built on top of Moose helped solve concrete problems. The examples vary both in scope and in the kind of problems. For example, we talk about how we fixed a caching problem in a Java system by analyzing logs, or how we fixed a Morphic problem by means of visualization and interaction. Even if these problems are so different, all of them were solvable with one uniform set of programmable tools. That is the power of Moose, and it is now at the fingertips of any Pharo programmer.

We cannot continue to let systems loose in the wild without any concern for how we will deal with them at a later time. Two decades ago, Richard Gabriel coined the idea of software habitability. Indeed, given that engineers spend a significant part of their active life inside software systems, it is desirable for that system to be suitable for humans to live there. We go further and introduce the concept of software environmentalism based on a simple principle: Engineers have the right to build upon assessable systems and have the responsibility of producing assessable systems.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
