and so goes to two lines
• A further point sums it up
5. Finney’s “Mighty Baptism”
Autumn 1821
“ … As I turned and was about to take a
seat by the fire, I received a mighty
baptism of the Holy Ghost. Without any
expectations of it … the Holy Ghost
descended upon me in a manner that
seemed to go through me, body and soul. I
could feel the impression, like a wave of
electricity…. It seemed like the very breath
of God….”
6. “Mighty Baptism” (cont’d)
“No words can express the wonderful love
that was shed abroad in my heart. I wept
aloud with joy and love; and … I literally
bellowed out the unutterable gushings of
my heart….”

8. Charles Finney Preaching:
1830s
“The Spirit of God came upon me with such
power, that it was like opening a battery upon
them. For more than an hour, and perhaps for
an hour and a half, the Word of God came
through me to them in a manner that I could
see was carrying all before it…. The Holy Spirit
fell upon the congregation in a most
remarkable manner. A large number of persons
dropped their heads, and some groaned so that
they could be heard throughout the house.”
9. Finney’s 7 Signs
of Coming Revival
1. The providence of God says revival is near.
2. Wickedness grieves, humbles, and distresses
Christians.
3. A spirit of prayer for revival begins to grow.
4. The attention of ministers is directed toward revival
and spiritual awakening.
5. Christians begin to confess their sins to one another.
6. Christians are found willing to make sacrifices
necessary to carry it on.
7. Ministers and professors are willing to have God
promote revival by whatever instruments he pleases.

11. Daniel Nash’s Last Letter
1831
“Since you were here I have been thinking
of prayer—particularly of praying for the
Holy Ghost and its descent. It seems to me
I have always limited God in this request….
I have never felt, till since you left us, that I
might rationally ask for the whole influence
of the Spirit to come down; not only on
individuals, but on a whole people, region,
country, and world….”
12. Daniel Nash’s Last Letter
(continued)
“ … On Saturday I set myself to do this, and
the devil was very angry with me, yesterday
for it. I am now convinced, it is my duty and
privilege, and the duty of every other
Christian, to pray for as much of the Holy
Spirit as came down on the day of Pentecost,
and a great deal more. I know not why we may
not ask for the entire and utmost influence of
the Spirit to come down, and, asking in faith,
see the full answer.”
