Inspired by an idea posted by Mr Robbo, the PE Geek (@mrrobbo):

2. You will complete a short orienteering course
to learn about describing displacement.
You need to be in a group with someone who has a smart
phone/ iPhone. This person needs to install i-Nigma, a free QR
code reader (http://goo.gl/PEhaN) http://goo.gl/PEhaN
• Bring the map, clipboard, ruler, protractor and a pencil.
• Stay within the map boundary.
How to play:
• Scan the first QR code for the directions to the next position.
• Mark where you think it is on the map and run there. Find
the flag and scan the QR code attached.
• Note the route you took on your map.
• Read the next direction and note the fact. Mark the next
location on the map and off you go.
• There are six locations to find.
When you are done, have your map and notes checked.

3. Instructions: There are six positions to find.
As you scan the QR code at each, you will be
given the directions (as components or direction
and magnitude) to the next stop.
Mark the position of each of the stations on
your map and make a note of the fact about
describing displacement which is there.
When you have completed the course,
have your map checked and complete
the final task.
Use the vectors method to describe
three different positions on the course
in relation to the origin (front steps). 3
4. Course Designers:
• The course starts on the front steps and must
remain within the boundary on the map.
• You need to plot six positions on the map.
• You must write a clear description from one to the
next. Do this on scrap paper first.
• Three descriptions should use the http://goo.gl/PEhaN
components format (e.g. 20m E, 50m S)
• Three descriptions should use magnitude and
direction format (e.g. 20m, 30o South of East)
• Have your work checked before you make QR http://quikqr.com/
codes for each of the instructions.
• Once the QR codes are ready, they will be attached
to the orienteering flags.
• Place them noticeable positions at each location
without disturbing the community.

5. http://goo.gl/nIf2l Outcomes:
• Distinguish between scalars and vectors.
• Distinguish between distance and displacement.
• Describe displacement of an object using components
(coordinates), magnitude and direction and directed
line segment vector diagrams.
• Describe motion of an object in a given direction based
on positive and negative displacement.
• Calculate distance and displacement from a map.
