What do YOU see?
*What could I
  do in this moment
     that would be
the exact OPPOSITE
   of everyone else?
I’m the weird one?
So:
Should you
  wear a
nametag?
‘
What’s your
 nametag?
What is
it that you
     do
What is
it that you

 It’s not

What is
it that you

What is
it that you

Let me
SUGGEST
  this:
Practice.
Practice.
Let me
ASK YA
 this:
The
reality is:

That’s my
reality:
I don’t know the
 first thing about the
   promotional
products industry:
Here’s what
I do know:
Your job is more than just
 slinging chotchkies.
Your job is to
prevent invisibility.
Your job is to
 give voice to
people’s story.
Your job is to
  give the priceless
gift of memorability.
So, that’s
your job.

The worst way to

The worst way to
 promote your
   business is
______________ .

    (No sexting you perverts.)
We did that for
three reasons:
1. Interaction is
 the engine of
    revenue.
You’re in business to
become known for a
 unique way of
   interacting
  with the world.
approachability
Interaction is the
 fulcrum point
of human decision.
fashion trends
that are here to stay:
Contact
 is the new content.

     Interaction
is the new information.
Gaming consoles.
  Computers.
 Smartphones.
  Networking
  equipment.
We don’t need more
 access to information,
   we need more
access to each other.
2. Follow up
 with value.
What did Sammy
   do right?
Demonstrate a
  valid reason
for his persistence.
Here’s
   my favorite
gift to give people:
LUNCH
Reflection.
  Respectful.
  Revelation.
Social Elevation.
Give gifts,
not burdens.
EXERCISE
*What gift have
   you received that
erased the memory
     every gift that
    came before it?
3. Go beyond
   the buy.
Good brands
 are bought,
great brands
are joined.
To join a brand is to
   CONNECT
     with it on a
    visceral level.
To join a brand is to
    ENGAGE
    with it on a
    human level.
To join a brand is to
      UNITE
    with it on a
   personal level.
When people
    join you,
the money follows.
Joinability

Joinable means
  subscribable:
    You are a
    publisher.
Joinable means
  followable:
You are syndicating
    your brain.
Joinable means
    stalkable:
     You are a
  virtual expert.
People may love
 to buy, but they
long to belong
   even more.
So that’s
what I got:
And now for the
   one question
  everybody in the
room is silently asking:
“So, Scott, what
do you actually
 do all day?”
My job is to be a
resource to my
 audiences and
    clients.

If you want to unlock people’s awesomeness, it starts with the sincere belief that everyone has something worth sticking out there. Then, it’s just a matter of affirmation. For example, here’s what I do with my coaching clients: When someone says something brilliant, I usually say, “That’s a great insight! Have you written about that yet?” Now, most people say no. Either because they’re not disciplined enough to capture the majority of their brilliance; or because they don’t believe that they possess brilliance. So, what I usually do is write down their insight FOR them. Right then and there. In my journal. In front of their eyes. This honors their thoughts and demonstrates listening. Then, later on that day, I’ll email their words back to them with a note that says, “Once again, great insight! But if you don’t write this down, I’m going to steal it from you and take credit for it.” Whose brilliance needs reflecting and applauding? How are you laying a foundation of affirmation? And what would happen if you attended to everyone you encountered as a brilliant person who had something unique to stick out there?\n\n

But without that specific emotion, they’ll never gain a deeper understanding of which pervasive, expensive and relevant problem your work solves. Last month, I spent a few hours during my annual company retreat reflecting on this very issue. I thought long and hard about the emotions connected to my brand as a writer, speaker, mentor and entrepreneur. And here what I came up with: I delete average. I advocate against normality. I take people’s hiding places away from them. I unload the guilt people have been carrying around for years. I kick people’s addiction to permission. I petition people to inject their personality into all they do. That’s just a small selection. My final list came out to about a hundred different emotions. Pretty cool exercise. Might want to give it a shot. The point is: If you want to capture heartshare, you have to peel away the superficiality. After all, your mission is more than a statement. How will you bring your cause to life?\n\n
