3. As a young boy Frost loved to hear his mother read, which introduced him to a variety of literature.

4. The grief and suffering due to the deaths of a son and daughter led Frost to poetry.

The Road Not Taken And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; In this stanza we are dealt with two paths before us and only one can be chosen. These paths can represent the struggles in life as well as the options to overcome these struggles.

Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same, In the second stanza we are delving into one path. While examining this path it seems to be the better choice because it has been worn from others.

9. Rhyme End Rhyme: “Most common form and comes at the end of the lines” (Meyer 714). The Road Not taken uses end rhyme throughout the poem with an A B A A B pattern. For example in the first stanza the first and third lines rhyme with the ending words being wood and stood.

10. The meaning of the Road Not Taken is that when forced with two options the obvious choice may not be the best choice. Sometimes it may be appropriate to choose the path less traveled and create your own result.
