Hydropower can be a powerful engine for economic growth, especially when linked with industries that seek low-carbon energy supply. Traditional and new power-intensive industries, such as metal, manufacturing, consumer goods, and internet data centres, are particularly likely to demand low-carbon energy. How to successfully link generation with these industries’ demand for power? This session will present recent case studies and will discuss their regional impacts. • Geographically isolated, though strategically located

• Small economy, in need of a critical mass in economic
activity to take off
• Large geographic space, relative to population size, with
costly infrastructure requirements to develop into the
interior
• Agriculture, in need of higher value-added activities to
improve livelihood

3. Connecting to the Global Supply Chain
• Problems
– Identifying specific products which Sarawak can produce
– Identifying markets for local products
– Promoting local products
– Cost competitiveness re transport and logistics
• Solution: Think in reverse
– Attract market to Sarawak with a real attraction
– Projects will link Sarawak back to the markets and the global
supply chain
– Projects will form a basis for triggering off local activities
– Construction, services, skills
– SMEs, value chains, supply chains

4. Sarawak as Energy Producer

5. Local Industrialisation
• For the first time, Sarawak is using its energy resources to
develop industries a home
• Why industries – to generate higher income; agriculture
has the lowest productivity growth
• Local communities unused to industrialisation – cultural
shock
• They want change for the better, and change starts with
economics
• After heavy industries, we need to focus on higher value-
added industrial activities
