9. How chocolate is made…. Cacao trees are grown in tropical regions of South America, Africa and Asia where the climate is hot and wet. Pods grow upto 25cm long. Inside each pod there are around 45 white beans. Harvesting the pods is hardwork. Workers will often attach knives to long sticks in order to cut down the pods.

10. How chocolate is made…. After harvesting, the beans are fermented to improve the flavour. Fermentation turns the beans brown. The beans are covered in banana leaves. The beans are left to ferment for 6 days.

11. How chocolate is made…. The beans are put into sacks of around 70kgs, graded for quality and sold to the chocolate industry through ‘buyers’. The sacks are then transported to chocolate factories in the U.K., such as York.

12. How chocolate is made…. The beans are cleaned and roasted at the chocolate factory. They are then ground in order to make a liquid called cocoa liquor, which turns solid once cooled.

13. How chocolate is made…. The chocolate is turned into a paste and rolled. Milk is then added to the chocolate. Machines then stir the chocolate. Machines cool and heat the chocolate repeatedly to improve the appearance
