Gimhae ('Golden Sea', according to its Chinese characters: 金海) is often unjustly overlooked - omitted from guidebooks, viewed as a mere suburb of Busan, remembered only as the setting for Gimhae Airport. However, on a day trip to Gimhae in autumn 2014, I found myself hiking into a land of legend, uncovering fascinating historic sights from the Gaya kingdom - King Suro's tomb, Queen Heo's tomb, a hilltop fortress, a turtle-shaped hill where future rulers had (so went the legend) hatched from eggs (suggesting sun workship, say some historians). After using this brilliant material for a blog post, I realised that it would also be perfect for my 'English through Mythology' course for South Korean students of English.
