2. Sets and Props
They wanted to film the movie in the actual Caribbean itself.
This wound up being difficult with the towns and people.
All the sets and props were built from scratch.
They’re object was to make the movie as real as possible, not Disney-like.
3. The Ships
The Black Pearl ship was completely constructed, for the special role
o f t h e ‘ g h o s t s h i p ’ . A l t o g e t h e r, t h r e e s h i p s w e r e b u i l t f r o m s c r a t c h .
The ships were repainted and rearranged to look like the British
Royal Navy ships.
Everything was carefully researched and built to scale.
4. Costumes and Makeup
T h e c o s t u m e s a r r i v e c o m p l e t e l y b r a n d n e w, b u t t h e y h i r e d
professionals to make them look like “dirty” half-alive pirates.
The main focus was the teeth, the fake teeth the pirates wore were
designed to feel like real teeth and not inhibit their speech.
All the main people wore eye contacts, each for their own purposes.
5. Stunts
T h e s w o r d f i g h t s w e r e c h o r e o g r a p h e d v e r y p r e c i s e l y, t h e y h a d t o b e
rehearsed and memorized.
They also had the challenge of inserting their character's personality
into the stunts and fights.
When Barbossa’s crew turns into skeletons and the British Navy is
fighting them, to do the special effects, they had to choreograph
every move almost like a dance, and the British had to fight ‘air’,
t h e n t h e y e d i t e d i n t h e c u r s e d s k e l e t o n p i r a t e s l a t e r.
6. Special Effects
They had to make the animation look completely ‘photo-real’.
For a certain parts they had to build miniature versions of three
ships .
They used wave machines, dunk tanks, and machines gave the ships
a realistic movement.
During the animation of the skeleton pirates, to decide how much
b o n e / s k i n t h e y s h o u l d h a v e , t h e y s c a n n e d Tu r k e y J e r k y i n t o t h e
c o m p u t e r a s s k i n , a n d m o l d e d / e d i t e d i t t o g e t h e r.
7. J o h n n y D e p p - J a c k S p a r r o w
In the beginning of this movie, Jack Sparrow starts out in the
jail cell. Therefore, he comes off to be sort of the bad guy but
as the story unfolds he’s really not. He has sort of a boastful
p e r s o n a l i t y, h e ’ s v e r y b o l d .
His goal is just to get his ship the “Black Pearl” back.
8. O r l a n d o B l o o m - W i l l T u r n e r
W i l l Tu r n e r s t a r t s o u t a s a n u p t i g h t , u p s c a l e , b l a c k s m i t h b u t
actually ends up being one of the main men in all the action.
His goal throughout the movie is to get Elizabeth Swann safely
into his arms. He later finds out what he dreaded most, that he
actually is considered a “pirate”.
9. G e o f f r e y R u s h - B a r b o s s a
Considered a “dirty pirate” who really knows how to put up a
fight. His character comes off as deceitful and his only goals
a r e t o b e s u p e r i o r, a n d t o l i f t h i m s e l f a n d h i s c r e w o f t h e i r
curse. He was the main antagonist the movie.
10. K e i r a K n i g h t l e y - E l i z a b e t h S w a n n
Elizabeth’s role changed drastically throughout the movie.
S h e w a s r o y a l t y, h e r f a t h e r w a s w e a l t h y a n d u p s c a l e
respected person who wanted everything to be perfect, the
way he want defines ‘perfect’. But when Elizabeth is with the
pirates she becomes pirate-like and is involved in a lot of
pirate confrontations and fights.
