- There are so many different sites that exist that it is hard to keep upThe availability of social networking has caused usage to become so common that some can consider it an addictionWhile social networking has a positive purpose, it can turn into an addiction with horrible effects, causing unhappiness
- is SN just innocent curiosity or has it turned into an obsession?It started as a hobby but has turned into a lifestyleAddiction to SN and the internet in general can blur the line b/w reality and the virtual worldBut, How do you know when that line is drawn?When you are constantly attached to your phone or computer, it is an issue that can be solved by setting restrictions.Technology isn’t a necessity, but a privilege and it should be kept as a leisurely activity, but unfortunately it hasn’t
- Can the addiction of social networking and the addiction of technology in general go too far?The answer is yes.There were two horrifying cases in South Korea where children winded up dead because their parents were too consumed in the virtual world to notice what was going on in the real world.Just two years ago in 2010, a couple from South Korea allegedly allowed their baby to starve to death while playing online games. They apparently spent 12-hour stretches on the Internet only feeding their baby once in-between. Although it is not social networking, it is still a horrible result of technology usage.Later the same year, a woman who was also located in South Korea was reported to have killed her 3 year old son after he disturbed her from her online gaming.Gaming, like social networking, is fun and addictive, but when you let that addiction consume you, it will have bad results.

- Usage of social networking has skyrocketed-it is clearly an addiction which is a problem in itself. Social networking can promote positive results but when used this often, can it really be beneficial?
- April 27, 2012 according to the United States Census Bureau Facebook had845 million monthly active users at the end of December 2011. Approximately 80% of our monthly active users are outside the U.S. and Canada. Facebook had 483 million daily active users on average in December 2011. We had more than 425 million monthly active users who used Facebook mobile products in December 2011. Facebook is available in more than 70 languages.
- Just to show a statistic, the number of daily active facebook users from has gone from 92 million in 2002 to 482 million in 2011. it would seem as if people are finding benefit of using these sites, but then why does it go so far sometimes that it turns into an addiction?
- Many factors affect happiness in an individual. Prestigious authors Nicholas A. Christakis and James Fowler claim that the happiness of an individual can extend out to three degreesSo basically “A person's happiness is related to the happiness of their friends, their friends' friends, and their friends' friends' friends—that is, to people well beyond their social horizon.”So as your number of friends increases-your potential for happiness could increaseFor example, online dating can increase your chances of happiness by finding a lifelong partnerOr social networking in general increases happiness bc it gives you so many more chances to make new friends
- A positive way social networking can be used is for philanthropy.These days, you can donate money overseas as quickly as you can send a one-word text to a 5-digit number, and it happens constantly. Well-followed celebrities can inform people of disaster and people in need of financial assistance, and it can be sent and received within seconds. For example, Alicia Keys plays footage of needy children at her concerts and then flashes a code for fans to send donation via text message. This impulse to givecan be carried on into the physical world being more inclined to give provides more happiness and gratification for anyone involved.
- So why does technology spark these addictive behaviors? Some claim it’s all due to dopamine.Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, or a messenger to the brain, which causes seeking behaviorIn social networking, this seeking takes the form of refreshing timelines, checking for mentions, monitoring our retweets, likes and +1s. It’s a constant search for information.This imitation of happiness may not be true dopamine, but it definitely feels like it.
- In conclusion, social networking does affect our happinessWhether that is positive or negative is up to the individual themselvesThere are so many positive aspects of social networking such as making connections, reconnecting with others, or making new friendsBut at the same time, there is a universal addiction to social networking that sometimes prevents the positive aspectsIf social networking is used moderately and effectively then it can definitely increase one’s happinessBut if usage becomes a problem then it can provide negative effects that fight happiness by causing problemsSocial networking is so common and balance is the key if you want to maintain happiness
