Thesis: Hoarding is a serious mental issue that should be
classified as a disorder because of negative affects on family,
living conditions and health.
2. Hoarding is the obsessive collection of items, along
with the inability to get rid of them.
Hoarding affects from 700,000 to 1.4 million people in
the United States.
3. There are many types of hoarding but two of the most
commonly known are:
Animal hoarding
Older-Adulthood hoarding
4. Animal hoarding is when people own excessive
amounts of animals and are unable to provide proper
care and living environments for them.
PROBLEMS:
Poor air quality
Affects health of animals and humans
5. Older Adulthood hoarding occurs in older age groups
rather than younger, but often begins at adolescence.

6. Hoarding not only affects the everyday living of the
hoarder, but their families as well.
PROBLEMS:
Embarrassment
Limited family gatherings
Bad habits for children
7. Living in a home filled with clutter makes daily
lifestyle nearly impossible.
PROBLEMS:
Immobility
Lack of sanitation
Poor hygiene
8. Living in a lifestyle with poor hygiene and unsafe living
conditions can lead to many health related issues.
PROBLEMS:
Injury from falling/falling objects
Fire/Emergency
Air quality
Zoonotic diseases
9. According to Mayo Clinic hoarding is not yet considered a distinct
disorder.
Considered a symptom of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder.)
As the presentation showed there is nothing common about hoarding
items, therefore it should be its own disorder rather than symptoms of
a disorder.
10. There is always help for someone who has a problem
with hoarding, many services are available nationwide.
