Media Studies
JRCS Open Evening
13th September 2012

                      Joanne – A Level Media Studies 2010
“The media’s the most
  powerful entity on earth.
  They have the power to
make the innocent guilty and
to make the guilty innocent,
     and that’s power.
 Because they control the
   minds of the masses”
What is Media Studies?

• Should violent computer games be
  banned?
• Can Facebook, Twitter, and BBM be
  blamed for the London riots?
• Do celebrities make good role models?
• How are music videos produced?
• Is the BBC good value for money?
• Why are cigarette adverts banned, but not
  alcohol adverts?
                               Amy – A Level Media Studies 2010

What are the benefits of Media Studies?

• Students learn to see when the
  media are manipulating them or
  others with, for example, advertising
  techniques;
• Students learn to understand how
  the media stereotypes groups of
  people, and how this affects the way
  people see those groups;
• Students learn to produce various
  types of media texts, such as
  magazines, music videos, radio
  broadcasts, and short films.
What do students study?

              • In Y7-9: Students are
                introduced to Media Studies
                as a part of the English
                curriculum;
              • In Y10 & Y11: All students
                study the media as a part of
                the GCSE English syllabus,
                and Media Studies is offered
                as a GCSE option;
              • Post-16: Students have the
                opportunity to study Media
