A former professor of anesthesiology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Dr. John Charles Gerancher served the school for more than a decade. Between 1999 and 2011, Dr. John Gerancher created and introduced a regional anesthesia program to the University's Baptist Medical Center that includes clinical care as well as a teaching curriculum.

At Wake Forest University's Baptist Medical
Center, anesthesiology residents build
experience in all areas of pain control. For
interns scheduled to complete their residency
training at Wake Forest, this education begins
in the intern year as they focus on
anesthesiology. In the first year of residency,
students learn the basic methods and
procedures involved in hospital anesthesiology.
Regional anesthesia as well as obstetrical and
cardiothoracic anesthesiology are a part of
students' training from the beginning.

4.  Second-year anesthesiology residents
choose a subspecialty on which to focus.
Possible subspecialties include
neuroanesthesia, ambulatory anesthesia,
and acute pain management. Students
continue to pursue their areas of individual
interest during their third year, which
includes six months of elective study in
areas such as pediatric sedation or
research. Students may also take
advantage of intensive machine study,
airway training, and fellowship programs.
