Intercultural  Organisational  Management Lecture 3 (Week 5)
TODAY: Cultural 'dimensions': the notion  of 'power' / 'status' / 'hierarchy'    Who has power?    How is it expressed?    How does it affect business interactions?
'Power' / 'status' / 'hierarchy' Main concepts: 1.  'power distance' 2.  formality 3.  ascription of status 4.  paternalism & loyalty
1.  'Power Distance' How do people deal with inequalities  in power / status in their society? Do they accept them, or try to minimise them?
1.  'Power Distance' Egalitarian ____________ Hierarchical societies     societies ('Low PD')   ('High PD')
 
2.  Formality How are differences in status expressed? In many cultures (especially cultures with a 'high Power Distance'), differences in status are clearly symbolised / formalised.
2.  'Formality' Formal  ______________ Informal cultures   cultures
3.  Ascription of status How do people in a society  get  their status:    on the basis of achievement  or    on the basis of family background, age,  gender ?

4.  Paternalism  How does 'power' affect the responsibility of managers towards their employees?
4.  'Paternalism' Paternalistic __________ Non-paternalistic cultures   cultures
NEXT WEEK: Cultural differences: Tool set 2: Collectivism / Individualism How important is it to  me  to be  a member of a group? And how important is it to be able to be 'myself'? What other ways might there be to deal with these issues of     dependence and independence,     self-image, and     group membership?
