2. Conception
During conception the sperm and the egg
unit to become the zygote.
Mitosis-When chromosomes in a nucleus
are separated into two identical sets of
chromosomes and each set ends up in its
own nucleus.
3. First Trimester
• Most organ development
occurs in the first trimester.
• The heart is the first organ to
begin working.
• This trimester is the first 1-12
weeks of pregnancy.
• Morning sickness is common
for women during this stage of
pregnancy.
4. Second Trimester
• Morning sickness and
fatigue symptoms
usually fade.
• Known as the “easiest”
time of pregnancy.
• Between 18-20 weeks
you can find out the sex
of the baby.
• The baby begins to hear
the world outside of the
womb.
5. Third Trimester
• In the final stage of pregnancy
the baby’s organs fully
develop.
• Age of Viability- when the
fetus is able to live outside the
womb.
• Can be the most difficult time
of pregnancy, due to
discomfort.
• The fetus is able to taste what
the mother eats through the
amniotic fluid.
6. Birth
• Labor consists of three stages.
• First-Cervix is dilated to 3cm.
• Second- Active labor. The
cervix dilates from 3-7cm.
• Third- Transition stage. Cervix
dilates from 7-10cm.
